Rerun of Noriko Indo quilt in TCQC 01-02-16

Night we revisit a quilt added to the Collection in 2004.

 

"Walk in the Woods" Noriko Endo 2003 47.75"W x 36"L 

Many tiny bits of mostly cotton fabric layered with netting and quilted.  Additional fabrics used for trees and FMQ done. Then further fabric added for trees and decorative stitched details using rayon threads. 

 

 

I  am still amazed at the unlikely fabrics she used and yet created a most realistic forest.  It is difficult to take a detail picture because the camera focuses on the net and the fabric behind it.  Read the post I originally put on my blog to learn the story of how I acquired this piece.

PIQF - Foliage 10-23-10

The focus of these quilts is foliage - some critters are also here.

Noriko's distinctive technique creates beautiful woods and orchards. She has a special affinity for this type of quilt, each one she makes is a masterpiece.

Although this amazing frog lives among the lily pads and plops into very green water, I think the uneven edge is a distraction. Perhaps it would show better on a wall than on a curtain.

Betty has a different eye for color and and used it effectively in this unusually colored quilt.

There was another "Monstera" quilt in the show, but I don't know the maker and will not show a quilt without a name. After all the work that goes into a quilt, the artist deserves identity.

This quilt, also made by Betty Busby, was in the World Quilt Competition representing the USA. Again, her color sense is distinctive and eye catching. The water is especially wonderful.

Frieda Anderson quilt from TCQC 08-09-09

I keep a list of the quilts I have posted on my blog, but I took it with me to Long Beach because I had some help with reorganizing the files. Of course, the job is only half done and I brought back all the files and paperwork divided into "done", "half done", "need more info", "not done". But now I cannot find that list! I suppose it is misfiled in one of the folders, but I can't look tonight. I don't believe I have previously posted this gorgeous quilt.

"Walks in the Woods" Frieda Anderson 2002 65"W x 56"L

In December 2005 it hung in Mary Leakey's house in San Juan Bautista - it was perfect for Christmas.

I bought this quilt at the Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2004. It was traveling with the Husquavarna Viking Gallery of Quilt Art "Spirit & Strength" Quilt Tour. And it continued to travel until September 2005. I had gone to the Market as Ruth Powers' helper - it was a grand trip - and had no idea of buying a quilt (I usually don't plan it - it just happens!) Ruth had gone around looking at the exhibits while I watched the booth. When she returned she told me I needed to go look at the "Masters Exhibit", that I would love a couple of those quilts. I looked at the quilts and immediately found the Quilts, Inc. table and wrote out the check. I could hardly endure the wait for a year and a half until it 'came home'. Unlike many of Frieda's more recent work, this quilt is pieced, not fused. The name of the quilt derives from her many walks in the woods with her dog, George. Noriko is a Japanese quilter who I know from Empty Spools seminars at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA. And also because she has had quilts in the Visions exhibit and as a member of the Visions group I am able to meet the artists who attend the opening. It is gratifying to see that she is teaching more and in many respected venues. Her quilts have been in all the major juried exhibits and awarded many prizes. When you have a chance to see a Noriko Endo quilt in-the-fabric take a magnifying glass - you will be amazed.

In 2003 Noriko was the featured artist at one of the Empty Spools sessions, but at the last minute she could not fly over from Japan. However, she sent her quilts to hang in Merrill Hall for the week and also sent two quilts to be auctioned to benefit the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. I was the fortunate bidder on this quilt. Noriko's technique is unique and fascinating. She uses fabric scraps cut into very small bits - maybe 3/8" wide and 1/2" to 3/4" long - she adds a layer of tulle the size of the quilt and then quilts it by machine. She will add additional details and another layer of tulle and do more quilting. Finally, she uses rayon thread to sketch in the details.

When I had the quilt appraised this is the description the appraiser wrote: "This whole cloth composition consists of layers of small irregular shapes of cloth of various colors, layered with tulle, and additional pieces of cloth [tree trunks], and embellished with thread painting to create the image of a forest." She further stated that "the quilting is of fine quality, with even stitching and balanced tension."

Noriko Endo, the quilt maker, does not have a website, however, you can find some sites that include pictures of her quilts by Googling: "Noriko Endo" quilter. If you leave off the 'quilter' you will get sites that feature Noriko Endo the porn actress. Entirely different people!
