Some bird quilts on exhibit. 03-22-18

There is currently an exhibit of quilts depicting birds at Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove.  I am always attracted to images of birds in quilts and just about anywhere else.  If you are in the area, especially to attend Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar, do have a look.  There is a variety of techniques and styles and sizes, including Ruth McDowell's fabulous "A Rash of Flamingoes".   One of the great things about having a collection is sharing it with others.

Here are some of the 12"X12" quilts in the exhibit, most are from the SAQA online auctions.

Left to right and top to bottom:
"Red Hen" - Olga Norris/England (not in exhibit), "Walk the Line" - Doria Goocher/San Diego,CA, "Another Collector" (Magpie) - Diane Wright/Connecticut,  "The Crow's Story" - Olga Norris/England (not in exhibit),
  "Steller's Jay" - Terry Grant/Oregon, "Night Owl" - Judith Roderick/New Mexico, ,"Taking a Break" - Lynn Welsch/New Mexico,
 "From Above-Crows" - K.Velis Turan/New York, "Yellowheaded Blackbird" - Ruth Powers/Kansas, "In the Thicket" - Sonia Grasvik/Washington

Spring and Rain in SCalifornia 03-20-18

Big rain predicted for Wednesday and Thursday, we all hope it is a gentle rain, so that it will soak in and not run off into the sea.  And a gentle rain will not create the terrible mudslides where the wildfires ate up all the foliage last fall.  Today I drove by some of the open country that is still just brown soil with black dead trees and bushes.   If the rain is torrential all those hillsides will be on the roadways.  Sad.   However, Spring is springing here.  There are bedding plants blooming in front yards and the fragrance of citrus blossoms and pink jasmine is heavy in the mornings when we walk.

Here are some more March blooming plants.

Heliotrope (with a wonderful fragrance)

Red Kangaroo Flower

Marigolds

Red Hot Poker

Single Fuchsia

Dutch Iris

TCQC - Checks and Bars by Sue Benner 03-18-18

Here is one of Sue Benner's pieces in the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  I purchased it in 2010 from the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles auction.

"Checks and Bars Jumble" - Sue Benner, Texas - 11"square.
"Reclaimed" fabric in silk, cotton, poly, hand-dyes, commercial cotton.

Sue is a genius at reclaiming fabric from her own projects, second hand clothing, scraps from students, anything and everything.  What vibrant color she has put into this "jumble" to make a bright square of color on my wall.   The quilting is not "matchsticks", but more match boxes a-kilter.  Great little treasure.

This picture shows her signature knotted tassels at each corner.  I am always fearful that some tidy person will take their scissors and trim off the tassels!  Part of her class instruction is how she achieves the multi-color satin stitch edging and these tight corner knots.

Here is the back with the title and her signature in gold paint.
