Saturday Stories - Postage Stamps 11-11-17

I was thinking about this story today because I bought a roll of first class (forever) stamps for $49.00.  It reminded me of a long ago tale when postage was three cents for first class (until 1958).  An interesting listing of postal rates is at:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Diane was about 12 years old she took the bus into town to do some shopping and have her hair cut.  Her family went almost everywhere on the bus, since their mother didn't drive and the bus was very convenient and cheap.  Only ten cents during the day and increasing to twenty cents after a certain time - maybe 4pm.  It was a fun day, alone in downtown, looking in the store windows and wandering through several department stores.  She even had lunch at the Buttermilk Corner, her favorite diner.  But she dawdled too long and missed the last ten cent bus home.  By that time she had spent almost all her money and only had about thirteen cents left in her pocketbook.   What to do?  She tried to talk the driver of the next bus into letting her ride for a dime, but no luck.  Her almost last source was going to the post office (the huge building with marble floors and high marble counters) and waiting in line to see if the postal clerk would buy back some stamps.  No luck.  She tried several people in line, but they just dismissed her.  Until a lady standing in another line called her over and asked what the problem was.  After Diane explained the lady just gave her a dime!  She didn't want the stamps.  And Diane was able to take the bus home and have a few cents left over.  In 2017 we would call that "paying it forward".  She was a nice lady - ten cents would mail three and a third letters.   Diane learned a life time lesson and has never since been down to thirteen cents.
Friday Feet 11-10-17
This top picture I lifted from the Internet.  It must be from the early 60's.
Oh, those terrible pointed toes I am still paying for in bad feet at 79!
And this one is the feet at Artstream, an art quilt group in San Diego.
Black & White 11-06-17
Some people on Facebook have been having fun with posting black and white photos with the caption:
Seven days.
Seven black and white photos of your life.
No people.
No explanation.
Challenge someone everyday.
I'm going to blog my pictures on Mondays since I haven't been browsing online much.
Karen Stiehl Osborn quilt re-visited 11-05-17
There are a couple Karen Stiehl Osborn quilts in TCQC.  This one she offered 2010 for the highest bidder when she was raising money for one of her foster rescue doggies that needed surgery and I was the highest bidder.  The doggie had his surgery and now has a loving forever home.
"Fifteen" Karen Stiehl Osborn 2010 15" x 15"
Karen made this piece for the QuiltArt Quinceanero exhibition in February 2010. It tells the story of her evolution in fiber art - from traditional pieced work with commercial batiks through her current fascination with painting on canvas.
 Her signature is on the front in the lower right corner. I do prefer that quilts be signed on the
front, as painters have been signing them for centuries.
The colored strips with batting showing on the edges represents her traditional quilts of yore. The birds on a wire are so special - I always enjoy watching the migrants flow down to land on the wires for a rest.
Karen is an early bird - up and out with her camera whenever she has a chance. I like this excerpt from her journal "...morning I set off early as the ......". I always admire early risers, but I am a confirmed night owl - it takes all kinds we night owls do the swing and graveyard shifts all over the world.
Great vivid blue back on this quilt and a thorough informative label. Check Karen's work on her website: www.karenstiehlosborn.com and on her blog http://stiehlosborn.blogspot.com/
