Thursday Treasures 05-21-20

Well, It isn't MY treasure, but something I see every day, usually twice.  I have lived in this house for over 30 years and from the very first day I have wanted to make some clothes for this lady.  I've done some drawings of how I could make a "santa" suit for her and fasten it with Velcro strips.  Of course, I don't intend on asking the owners.  They would just wake up one holiday morning and see their naked beauty clothed.  I don't have the nerver, unfortunately.

The one story house is nondescript, tucked into a corner where two roads end.  The "landscaping" is just anything the owners want to stick in the ground with lots of weeds.   She is really quite a nice statue, but the location is so odd, I wonder if she has been there for fifty years, since the houses were built.  I keep hoping someone will take pity and give her a nicer environment.

Thursday Treasures 05-14-20

Well, this isn't really a treasure, but it is something I have in the back of a closet somewhere.  They are left over from my first marriage which ended in 1969!   I have no idea why I still have them.  Packrat-itis?

These are stretchers for drying trousers.  Insert one in each leg of the trousers and expand them with the little clips on top and bottom to flatten the legs with a crease down the front and back.  Let them dry, remove the stretchers, and there is a crease and no ironing required.

I admire people who clean out their house every year, or even every other year.  But it doesn't seem to be something I can accomplish in any year.  I suppose the pandemic would have been a good time to start, but I haven't done it.  Seem to find lots of other more interesting things to do.  Or read a book!

Thursday Treasures 05-07-20

Another "treasure" I keep because I just can't part with it.  This was a gift from my great aunt Effie Brown when I was in Home Ec class in high school.  And all the spools are wooden spools from over the last almost 70 years.  I'm sure the thread is tired and brittle and I will never use it.  But this makes a nice sentimental decoration in my sewing room.

Most of these are Star or Coats and Clark, which were the common brands back then.  Cheapest was 10 cents a spool.

It stands up like an easel to make the selection oh-so-much easier!

This is the back.  Not really crooked, just the angle I took the picture.

Thursday Thoughts 04-30-20

Here are a few more "treasures" I cannot part with.  Maybe I should title this "Thursday Treasures" rather than Thursday Thoughts!   I imagine these items are at least 100 years old and have belonged in my family for all those years.

Once upon a time restaurants served butter on individual tiny plates called butter pats.  They are about 2 1/2" in diameter and generally held just one pat (a TBLS) of butter.  These are from a diner or some such establishment, although sets of fine china could also include these little plates.  I did not realize until a few years ago that the pat on the left and the Spencer's cream pot have the same black and red pattern. They may or may not have been acquired together.  The pat on the right is a very common pattern from those days.

This little pot with the name Spencer's, which was my maiden name, was used to serve cream for coffee or tea.  I have always supposed that Spencer's Restaurant was in Portland, Oregon, where I spent my early years, but I don't know.  All through my 81 years it has held toothpicks, in my mother's cabinet and in mine.  I do have a male Spencer cousin and I spoke to him about this one time, but he didn't seem very interested and I have no contact with any of his children.  So I suppose this will appear at the Salvation Army store when I have used it for the last time.  I hope a Spencer finds it and enjoys it.
