Friday Feet 07-12-13

Boy, oh boy, I would wear these in a minute.  Maybe I will.  I'm tired of my shoes and it doesn't help that I am always looking at shoes these days.  They don't seem like summer shoes, but Autumn will be coming before I know it.

Memories of Mary Ellen Hopkins 07-11-13

Mary Ellen was a ball of energy and so very funny. I've been trying to remember the name of her fabric shop; I think it was Crazy Ladies and Friends in Santa Monica. She carried fabrics that one didn't see in other shops, but it was a very small space. She was close with Kaye Rheingans, the founder of Orange County Quilters Guild, who was very tall and "stout". The two of them would be on stage, Mary Ellen giving one of her presentations and Kaye helping her hold quilts. Tiny Mary Ellen would hop up on a chair so they could hold the quilt straight, one on each side. They would banter back and forth and the audience would be rolling in the aisles.  I took a couple classes with her, but I couldn’t get into her PPM (Personal Private Measurement).   She thought everyone should work with their own seam allowance and forget about the ¼” standard.  I had been making quilts for a lot of years and knew that consistency of seam allowance was important.  I couldn’t change to PPM.  But her books offered new techniques and ideas, so I just used my own PPM, which was/is ¼”.   She had a good influence on the growth of quiltmaking, offering quicker ways to create and finish a quilt.  She was a quilting pioneer.

Wordless Wednesday 07-10-13

Although this is Wordless Wednesday, I need to add a few words.  The quilting community has lost another long time star, Mary Ellen Hopkins, author of "It's Okay to Sit on my Quilt",  has died at the age of (about) 83.  She has not been active for five or six years.  I have this information from:

Return from San Diego 07-07-13

I drove to San Diego this morning to visit an art quilt friendship group.  They have asked me to join the group, but I don't know - a two hour drive is something I can no longer take lightly.  I am so tired tonight that I can't sort out a picture of one of the TCQC quilts to post.  The traffic on I-5 was very light this morning, but I expected a miles long traffic jam on the way home.

But it didn't happen.  I took this picture northbound on the I-5 at about 5:30pm, after I had stopped at the Crate & Barrel outlet off Palomar Airport Drive and Starbuck's.  It was almost creepy to see so few cars on the road on Sunday - the end of the 4th of July weekend.

I was sailing  past the one Rest Stop along the way.  But see the crest of the hill up ahead?

Just before the Border Patrol/Agricultural everything came to a halt and we started with the creep-creep-creep.  For about twenty miles.  But then things started moving again and I was quickly home.  I saw no accidents, no CHPs parked along the way with their radar cams.  And no masses of cars returning home after the holiday weekend.  Go figure!

I am working on the possible quilts to include in the TCQC exhibit at Visions Art Museum that opens November 1st.  As I go through the pictures I'll pull some quilts that I have yet to post on my blog and take some photos.  Need to get caught up with everything!  I'm so slow any more.
