Friday Food 03-08-24

 While in SDiego I stayed in Air B&B with Pat Pauly, the teacher, so we ate breakfast at the house and sometimes dinner also.  We shopped at the local Von's Grocery where I found these "mixed" eggs.  

There  were these four left to bring home, but the  original dozen were  more varied  with  darker browns  and  brighter blues with  one greenish one. I have purchased colored eggs from local growers, but have never seen them commercially packaged. But I usually just buy brown eggs from Trader Joe's and don't look to see what else is available.  

Inside they are like any eggs.  These  were medium rather than the large I usually buy.   The breed of chicken is Ameraucana, which lay eggs in several different colors, but most commonly shades  of blue.

Ten days of Easter Eggs 04-04-20

The neighborhood children are now looking for Easter egg images in our windows.  And drawing bunnies and Easter eggs on the sidewalk.  This scavenger search will last for about ten days.  Don't know if we need to change the eggs, guess I will just add more as the time goes by. 

Rather a scary bunny with a baby bunny on his head. 

Here is an egg for one of the panes in our front window.  Looks more like a hot air balloon, maybe I need to trim it a bit.  Oh, well, they will know it is supposed to be an egg. 

It is made with fused scraps on printer paper.  Disposable.

Friday Food 12-27-19

 One of my idiosyncrasies is drawing faces on hard boiled eggs.  I have done it at least since 1957 when I moved to California.  Don't remember before that when I lived in my childhood home.  My mother put an X on hers. 

It is, of course, just a way of indicating that they are hard boiled.  No other reason!

These are from a few years ago and somehow also required a date.  I suspect I took them on a road trip.  

I use a Sharpie to do the drawing.

Hard boiled.... 05-14-11

When I was a child my mother would mark eggs after she hard boiled them.  We always had lots of eggs because everyone kept chickens in the 30s and 40s - a saving grace during WWII.  At some point mom started drawing faces on eggs when she put one in a lunch bag - she was a gifted artist who, as a teenager, hand-tinted photos for photographers.  This was, of course, before color film.  I picked up her egg drawing habit and have always drawn faces on hard boiled eggs - just for the fun of it, something I do for myself.  I change "styles" every now and then - it just happens.  Currently I seem to be channeling Picasso's less talented sister. 

 

I always buy brown eggs - just because I love their colors.  Once in a great while I find araucana eggs in lovely soft blues and greens - I can hardly bear to break them.

A few years ago I discovered a copy of Corky's daddy's professional magazine with a cover full of "eggheads".   A completely different style from mine - I rarely give anyone hair. 

The blue polka dot chicken with fuzzy worm is a refrigerator magnet - fabric fused to the magnets you cut.  

 
Great eyelashes - with a sort of dewy look.
I use only Sharpies for this .
