Too late for me tonight. 04-10-16

Here I am at Asilomar, it is 11pm and I am exhausted.  All this hiking around is taking its toll on me.  I guess I will have to resort to the jitney.  Fortunately, I am right across the sidewalk from the classroom, Nautilus, so I  can easily walk to class.  To the Dining Hall...  not so much.  I should have brought a larger bottle of Tylenol/Arthritis pills.  Sue Benner's class is only twenty students which is a good number for the classroom, leaving us some space to move around.  The rain let up this evening, but it has rained pretty much all day - just a light sort of drizzle, but enough to soak through one's clothes quickly.  I visited Back Porch Fabrics,  had lunch at the Red House, and went to the Monterey Peninsula QGuild quilt show at Chataqua Hall.  They had a lot of traditional and traditional variations, but also the last row was all contemporary quilts - some were very well done.  It is a small hall so there are no vendors, but a cute little boutique and "garage sale" in a back room.  Then I drove on to Asilomar to check in at the Empty Spools desk and haul my stuff into the classroom.  I hope I have all the right stuff!

Monterey Peninsula QGuild QShow 07-09-10

It has been almost a month since I drove north to see the Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild Quilt Show, which occurs every other year. They have some excellent quiltmakers in their membership, so there are always interesting quilts. Three of these were started in Ruth McDowell classes and the fourth uses designs from one of Ruth's books. I enjoy seeing the final outcome of quilts that have been started in a class I was part of. Amazing results come from Ruth's classes and students who have never designed their own quilt are 'over-the-moon' with the results. Rarely someone completes a top in class, but they are always small works. The best way to start out on a new technique is to complete as much of the quilt in the class when the teacher is there to assist if you need it. Nice to see that some of these quiltmakers have received ribbons for their work.

Quilts from Monterey Peninsula QShow 06-12-10

Today was the first day of the two-day Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild Quilt Show which is being held in Seaside (just north of Monterey) at the high school gym. It was one of the reasons I drove up for this weekend and it was worth the drive! There are 300 quilts plus some garments and a whole rack of creative quilted purses. Also vendors, food service from Erik's and some very welcoming guild members staffing everything. Mary and I were joined by Jeanette Horley for the 30 minute drive and we spend about four hours - all that my old body could take!

The highlight for us was seeing two ribbons on Mary's quilt "Oliver", which she started in an Empty Spools 2009 class with Susan Carlson. It was expertly quilted by Sharon Winter, a local quilter who does her work on her Bernina.

The blue ribbon is first place in the category "Small Art Quilts" and the purple ribbon is a Judge's Choice. Hurrah for Mary!!

Jean Dunn is a local friend who works and teaches at Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove. Her quilts are always a little different, a step beyond what most quilters would do. She has several quilts in this show and this is one of my favorites.

Beside the color - how I do love red (but not as much as yellow) - the motifs in the circles are worth a closer look and more than one time. This quilt literally pulsates on the wall.

I have more photos, but will wait until sometime next week to post. I still have pictures to post from the Beach Cities Quilters Guild QShow last weekend. After I drive home tomorrow I will have a quilt to post from TCQC.
