The Saga Continues 09-24-15

It was a busy day - returned rental car, picked up Lexus from auto body shop, stopped at market for detergent, entertained plumber who cleaned out my kitchen faucet, delivered SAQA traveling trunk H to FedEx for shipment to Florida, worked on newsletter, and suffered in the 98F heat when Edison  cycled my A/C periodically.   It  didn't ever get to 98F in my house, but hot enough to be uncomfortable.  I shouldn't complain because giving Edison permission to cut me off at high usage times gives me a nice cut on my electric bill.  Every little bit helps!

I should be done with repairs for a while, but you never know.  One thing that needs to be done is  painting the outside of the house.  It has been about eleven years and it is starting to look rather worn out.  The western sun shines on the front of the house which is mostly wood siding, so it blisters and starts to peel off.  I'm told that eleven years is lengthy in this climate.  Seems to me it should last twenty!

More repairs 09-23-15

The washing machine repairman came today and solved my problem.   He determined that when the water softener blew it's filter it stopped up the cold water line in the washer,  He cleaned it out and now the machine seems to be working okay.  I was going to do a load to be sure, but I left my detergent at the Laundromat.  There wasn't much left in it, maybe two loads.  Guess I'll have to stop at the store tomorrow.   And now I need a plumber to clean out the faucet in the kitchen.   It never rains, but it pours.

I am shipping the SAQA Traveling Trunk tomorrow.  I didn't know I was going to have to store it for several weeks and am glad to see it go.  SAQA provided a prepaid label, so all I have to do is drop it off at FedEx, which is quite close to where I live.

Five years ago this week I drove to San Juan Bautista via Hwy 101.   I stopped along the way to photograph the wild sweet fennel that grows along the road - this is north of Goleta, CA.

Autumn and Repairs 09-23-15

Lombardy Poplar - San Juan Bautista - Oct 2008

Autumn officially arrives sometime tonight, I believe.  With the heat we are having it is hard to believe that my favorite time of year is here.  Perhaps El Nino will bring early rains to put out the raging brush fires and give some relief to our dying landscape trees.  This wonderful Lombardy is gone now - a victim of the drought, I think.

My car is in the shop for a new bumper from where some jerk backed into me when I was traveling last summer.  Something got joggled loose this summer and there is enough of a rattle to be irritating when on the highway.  Meanwhile I am driving a Ford Focus that is so low it makes me feel I am sitting on the pavement.  With the Dodge Caravan and then the Lexus RX I have become accustomed to sitting up high and feel at a disadvantage being so low.  But I have enough to do at home this week that I won't be driving much.

The ArtQuilt Gallery•NYC
We are sad and sorry to announce the closing of The ArtQuilt Gallery•NYC.  It has been an amazing 4 years and we have met many wonderful people.  Unfortunately, the expense of running the gallery could not be justified.  We wish to thank everyone who supported us in that endeavor.
Naturally, we continue to feel that this is an important, under-recognized art form, and we will continue to work to advance the art of the quilt.  As always has been the case, quilts will be displayed at our related business, The City Quilter.

Wen Redmond quilt in TCQC 09-20-15

I purchased this 12"X12" quilt made by Wen Redmond in 2013 at Visions Art Museum.  It is not a blue quilt, but I can't seem to take a picture that shows the true color which is white. It is made of a sheer fabric that has been tucked vertically.   There was no title on the quilt so I entitled it "Winter Window".

"Winter Window"  Wen Redmond - original date unknown Purchased 2013
Machine pieced and quilted.

I believe this is printed on the sheer since Wen does use printing in her work.

You can see the ends of the black threads that Wen has left showing.

Here is the back, the same sheer fabric that is on the front.

And the label with web address.  I've added the title and the  purchase date.

09-21-15  Wen posted a comment to this blog, you can read it below.
It gives details about the techniques used.
