KoKo adjusting 09-08-18

KoKo is not used to me sitting at the sewing machine and ignoring him!  I have not sewn much of anything for almost two years and now I am working on two quilts, so I don't have much time to play "toss Froggie" with KoKo.  Poor little guy, he doesn't get it and keeps bringing Froggie to pound on my feet or reach him up into my lap.   It slows down the sewing process.

He has also developed a new interest in all his other toys and he brings them to me at the sewing machine.   "Play with me",  "Play with Ducky", "Play with Monkey".  "Just stop what you are doing and pay attention to me."  He is "indulged" - spoiled is such a nasty word!!

Friday Food - Birthday 09-07-18

Birthdays require dessert, don't they?  And I, having a large sweet tooth, indulge that requirement.   Every meal out the last few weeks has ended with dessert.  Those below were at Fish in a Bottle here in Placentia, one of my most favorite places to eat.  Japanese food isn't heavy on dessert, other than green tea ice cream with chocolate drizzle, but FiaB has several special offerings.

Since it has been my 80th birthday I have been telling most everyone I meet how old I really am!   I eat at Fish in a Bottle regularly, at least two or three times a month and know some of the waiters and waitresses, so had to share my news with them.  The result was a complimentary dessert (above) with a burning candle.  But the picture without the candle is better, so here it is.  I always want to lick the rim of the plate when they decorate it like this.   But I resist that temptation.   There is vanilla ice cream, a strawberry, and a small "cookie" of fried  tempura dough.  All sprinkled with powdered sugar.

We ordered two desserts to share.  This one is ice cream with tempura and, again, the strawberry.

This is tempura coated fried banana which is delicious, we have shared it before.  I had my doubts about fried banana, but it isn't completely soggy and the tempura is crisp.  This strawberry is more than sad and not ripe, but I don't eat strawberries so didn't have to suffer it.  The red under the bananas is raspberry coulis.

I'll probably not have dessert here again until next year.  It is almost too much after a good helping of sushi rolls or sashimi.    But it is special on one's birthday.

Book Club 09-04-18

I wonder how many of us belong to a book group of some kind.  I've been in the "Book Group" since about 1978.  And I have posted about the group over the years.  See "Book Group" in the right sidebar if you are interested in some of our adventures.

At the last meeting one of the members loaned me a book " The Book Club Cook Book"  by Judy Gelman and Vicki Levy Krupp (2004 Tarcher/Penquin).  Since I hardly ever cook I was interested mostly in the pages that talk about book groups around the country.  I found that most of the groups started in the late 1990s and mostly have fewer than a dozen members.  The listing is done by book titles A to Z and each has a recipe, a report on a group and some other tidbits of interest.  It was interesting to see that many of them have the same favorite books, which are also some of the favorites of our group.  Most books mentioned are contemporary fiction although some date back to The Good Earth and Grapes of Wrath.  About the oldest is Middlemarch by George Eliot, published in 1871.

Of course, being a reader, I had to read the recipes also.  They are widely varied and many look like they would be a treat.  Maybe I will take up cooking again.  They are all connected in some way with the book mentioned and some groups specialize in serving foods related to their current book selection.

I recommend this book for anyone who is both reader and cook.  Perhaps it is available at your library.

The Sketchbook Project

collects sketchbooks from around the world.  They accept donations from anyone, apparently, so we might think of this as a destination for our old sketchbooks when we take the rainbow bridge.

SAQA online auction coming soon 09-02-18

Although the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection started twenty years before SAQA's first online auction, I have purchased quite a few of the auction quilts.  It is a great place to find stunning small (12" x 12") quilts to increase a collection or to decorate your home.  Tonight I show three quilts that I particularly enjoy from the early years of the auction.
This year the auction starts on September 14th, just a few weeks away.  You can go to the website to see all the quilts that will be on offer and an explanation of how the auction works.  Choose your favorites and take a chance.
