Memorial to James Dean 05-18-19

James Dean piled up his Porsche and killed himself in 1955 on CA46 east of Paso Robles, CA.  It was a two car accident on a very lonely road in the middle of nowhere.  One of the ways he has been memorialized is with these much larger than life cutouts in a gas station lot - still in the middle of nowhere - where Dean had made his last stop.

Before arriving from the west you drive through miles of crops and, mostly, cattle grazing and unplowed land.

At the intersection of CA46 and CA33 you see this huge pouty James.
Compare to the truck for size.

And right at the corner is about a 20 foot cutout reminiscent of his role in "Giant".

Beyond "nowhere" are miles of oil fields until you reach I-5 at Lost Hills.  Of course, I-5 didn't exist in 1956.  James would have driven from LA on Hwy 99 or up the coast on 101.

Landscape roses 05-16-19

I don't remember when landscape roses first appeared in my area, I suppose at least a decade ago.  Since then they have been extensively planted as they require no pruning or deadheading.  They cover entire hillsides and white is the most common color.  These pictures are taken on our walks in the neighborhood.  I actually took four, but for some unknown reason, my phone doesn't always actually take the picture or maybe it doesn't save it.  I'll figure it out one of these days.

One problem I have with these rose bushes is that the flowers all deteriorate at the same time and for a while they look really scruffy.  And then another bloom comes on.  Great piles of white like snowdrifts and the spent petals blowing over the green lawns.  Quite lovely.

KoKo and Froggie 05-14-19

KoKo stayed with Cherie and Jim in Placentia while I was at Empty Spools.  He has stayed with them before, but two weeks might have been excessive.  However, they seemed to enjoy his company and he seemed to be a happy boy with them.  It is so special to have someone who will look after him as if he were their own.  Thanks, Cherie and Jim.

One of Froggie's wounds shows in this image.

Poor Froggie needed more surgery tonight.  A sort of skin graft where there is little to attach it to.  I will use some green fabric pen to tint the carpet thread that doesn't come in green.  If I leave it the light color he will pick at it with his teeth. One doesn't want to let a busy doggy loose with a tied quilt as they will sometimes remove the ties with their sharp teeth.    Froggie is looking sort of like a Frankenfroggie, isn't he?

TCQC quilts at Back Porch Fabrics PART THREE 05-12-19

These are the three Linda Colsh quilts from TCQC that were at Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove, CA during the Empty Spools Seminars (Feb - May).  The picture I took of them hanging in the gallery did not turn out, so these are taken some years ago.
The exhibit was titled "People and Critters" and these three all have people and one critter.
The rest of the quilts that were hanging are shown in my blog for 05-1019  and 05-11-19.
