Heroines 05-02-08

These pictures don't bring heroine to mind, I know. But the story is...

I stopped on my way home from errands to take a picture of a Jacaranda tree just starting to bloom. They seem a little early this year, usually they bloom later in May and into July. This one is at the entrance to Tri-Cities Park where Corky and I sometimes walk. As I took this picture I noticed a young woman trying to stop traffic on Kraemer, the rather busy divided street you can see to the left. As I walked closer to see what she was doing I saw a mama mallard in the crosswalk followed by her ten little ducklings. I stepped out to stop the traffic on my side of the divider and let the little guys get across. But when the mama jumped up on the curb the babies couldn't follow and ran along the curb, headed right for the storm drain. Sure enough, some of them fell in. The young woman just scooped up the rest of them with her hands and put them on the curb where mama was getting very distressed. Then this young woman laid down in the gutter and reached into the storm drain and hauled out two of the little guys, but the rest were out of reach. By this time another young woman had stopped and she also got down in the gutter - oh, to be young again. We tried several methods to retrieve the fallen guys without success, including wrenching a limb off a tree and sticking it down hoping we could manipulate the ducklings closer to the opening. Finally the second woman got a plastic toy out of her car that looked to be part of a dressing room set for, maybe, a Barbie. It has a scoop shape and it did the trick. She stuck it down in the drain and nudged the two fuzzy little feathered balls onto it. When she lifted them out onto the grass the mama came running to herd all her babies toward the lake. We three ladies congratulated each other and went on our way feeling very heroic.

They are very tiny babies and must have been hatched quite recently - so tiny, so cute.

I didn't get much of a picture of the Jacaranda tree, but here is a picture of some blossoms that I took several years ago. I will take some pictures later this month and post them so you can see what these glorious trees look like. If you haven't seen them before they can seem magical.

Skinny Strips - new view 04-30-08

Starting with a few elements and trying them in different arrangements and on different backgrounds is an interesting way to work. But there are all these decisions to make. Here is a new background, the same blue elements and some white dots. Maybe "Blue Moon in the Snow" , "Snowy Blue Moon" - it is hard for me to get away from literal.
Wide and short with scattered dots.
More balanced horizontal and vertical, scattered dots.
More background w/arranged dots.
More balanced background w/arranged dots.

Oh, no! More skinny strips 04-29-08

Yes, I am still dwelling on skinny strips. In this piece they are juxtaposed with a "color bowl" and placed on a asymmetrical background.
The turquoise pieces are not yet fused.

Bowl in the upper left.

Bowl in the upper right.

Bowl in the lower right and cut away 2/3rd of the piece.

Another worthy cause 04-28-08

Another fundraiser that I support is the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative which is run by author, teacher, quiltmaker Ami Simms. After expenses are paid the rest of the money raised goes to Alzheimers research. The main site is:
http://www.alzquilts.org/ Where you will find a quilt auction that runs from May 1st to May 10th and offers at least one quilt by a "big name" and a bunch of cuties to collect or mail.
Also, there is currently a sale of fiber postcards for Mother's Day: http://www.alzquilts.org/postcardsale.html
I do not have any little quilts in either of these events, but I have donated in the past and will donate in the future.

Summer roses 04-27-08

I thought I would post some photos of the roses in my yard because I came back from my travels to find them in glorious bloom. But SCalifornia is having a not too uncommon on-again-off-again summer in the springtime and the heat has blown most of the blooms. It was 99.5F in my backyard today and at 10pm it is 76F. It is supposed to be cooler midweek, so maybe I can get out to do some deadheading and weeding. The weeds also like the heat.
I don't know the name of this rose, it was planted before we moved here in 1986, but it is the most heat resistant one in my yard. The buds come out a lovely 'pearly' pink, but as they open the edges become darker pink until the fully opened flower is all dark pink. Unfortunately, the are not fragrant, but they are the most prolific bloomer I have.
