Doldrums 09-30-14

Yes, I am having a bad attack of the doldrums this week!  Just doing routine tasks and pretty much staying home.  Dinner out on Sunday with Carol and Dick Bednar at the local Greek place.  It was fun to hear about  their recent trip to London, York and Edinburgh.  They enjoy the theatre and concerts and that was a big focus of their trip.  Gilbert and Sullivan, anyone?

I've made a few runs to Starbuck's and have been sorting out what I need for the Elizabeth Busch workshop week after next.  Of course, I have been working on the SurfsideQG newsletter, but can't work at it in long stretches or my eyes start bothering me.  The new eye  drops help, but they aren't the solution to the problem.

I always think of Corky when I go to Starbuck's.  He loved having a "puppachino", which is just a small cup about half full of whipped cream.  He would get it all over his fuzzy face and then object when I tried to wipe it off.  They still offer puppachinos at Starbuck's - if you have your pooch with you when you drive through, just ask for one.  They used to give doggie treats, but then those from China were discovered to have bad ingredients and Starbuck's immediately stopped giving them out.  We wouldn't let Corky have them anyway and always carried some from home.

Marcia Derse’s (textile designer extraordinaire) daughter, Emily Pellichero, is a conservator of works on paper.  She is raising money to go to Bhutan to work on some ancient thangka paintings.  Thangkas are beautiful historic paintings with rich silk borders and fabulous viewing curtains.  Emily is doing fundraising for her trip and to gather needed conservation materials for the monks.  I have used Kick Starter and had no hacking problems, give it a try, every dollar counts.  Del

Jill Le Croisette quilt in TCQC 09-28-14

I think that quilt makers sometimes forget about simplicity and keep adding and adding - more fabrics, more colors, more quilting - until the point of the quilt is lost.  This quilt by the late Jill Le Croisette is striking in it's simplicity.   Only eight pieces, plus a pile of sticks for the nest - between 20 and 30 - creates a simple straight forward image of a crow, a nest and a tree.

"Crow" Jill Le Croisette - San Diego 2012  12" x 12"
Cotton fabric, cotton thread. Fused and machine applique. Machine quilting. Hand quilting

I always struggle with the feet on the birds that I include in a quilt and am never satisfied.  I would surely be proud if I had created these feet.

This tiny eye is machine appliqued.

This quilt had both a sleeve and a Velcro strip, but I removed the Velcro because it tends to gather threads and fuzz.  Besides, I never use Velcro hangers for quilts.
