Items from SQG live auction 11-17-12

This was the big money maker at the live auction.  It is a charming quilt with blocks made by various guild members.  I did not add it to TCQC - the winning bidder started the bidding high so I knew she was going to have it at any cost.  She told me afterward how much she will cherish this quilt.

I had the high bid on this cute pillow made by Jan Hirth.  I teased her that Corky would love it, but, of course, Corky has his own pillows - this one is for me.

I also won the bid on a very nice 1950's applique of red poppies on a white ground. I cannot seem to transfer a picture from the SQG website, so to see you it you will have to visit the following site where you will see all the lovely things that were auctioned on Tuesday.

Lunch at Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest 11-13-12

Another fabulous November Fest fundraiser for SQG.  There were over 200 members and guests this morning and I think a good time was had by all.  The latest report I heard showed that we exceeded the funds raised in previous years.   

 
We certainly enjoyed the food, a smooth running operation directed by the amazing LeAnn Goettel who has spearheaded the food prep and serving at all the special events for this guild. 
A delicious salad with greens, papaya, green beans, red bell pepper, jicama with a light dressing and sprinkle of seeds.  For dessert a melt-in-the-mouth cake with nuts and cranberries - a recipe I would like to have. 

There was a live auction and a raffle for HUGE baskets - a few so big and heavy that the winners couldn't carry them!  A harpist was playing as everyone arrived and when there was nobody at the mike there was lovely holiday music from our two member pianists who always entertain us with music appropriate to the season - what ever season it may be. 

I have yet to finish the pictures, but will work on them tomorrow and will arrange them in a Picasa web album for all to enjoy.

Photographer 10-16-12

There are seven or eight quilt guilds in Orange County, CA, and I belong to most of them.  I feel that I am lending support by paying my dues and do occasional volunteer service.  The guild that I go to every month is Surfside Quilters Guild which meets in San Clemente at the Presbyterian Church.  It is a daytime guild so I am not driving the freeway at night.  It is about an hour drive each way, but the ladies are so kind and enthusiastic that it is worth the time and effort to be at the meetings.  I do have a "job",  I am the guild photographer.  I take pictures of members and their quilts, workshop projects, monthly mini donations, the ongoing Block of the Month .... well, just anything that someone wants a picture of or I think would be a good picture for the newsletter and the website albums.   There are other members taking pictures for their own use and one of them, Emily La Mond always sends me copies of what she takes.  Thus the following two images of  "photographer at work".


I need to sit up front to do my job and Emily is always behind me somewhere!  This quilt is by our October speaker Anelie Belden whose program was about Dresden Plate quilts. 

Emily caught me again taking pictures of the Block of the Month - four examples from the last four months.  Everyone makes a blocks for their own quilt and assembles them to put their name in the hat for a drawing in June.  This year the quilt features the lady block by Freddy Moran and sewing tools/equipment. .

In past years I have collected and donated a basket of items all  of one color, but this year I decided to just do thread.  This "Basket of Threads" holds 150 spools of many different types of thread, some spools are slightly used and some are brand new.  I thank Karen Rips for her generous donations from her thread library. 

I tossed in some Superior prewound bobbins, a few machine needles and a box of straight pins.  It would be a good basket for someone who wants to try out different threads.  I imagine the value is in excess of $500 as there are mostly rayon, metallic, variegated and specialty threads.
