Friday Feet 10-11-13

I am sewing like a crazy woman and taking breaks to keep up with my e-mail, although I don't receive much from Thursday evening until Sunday night.  I assume everyone is involved with family doings.

The shoes are cute, unfortunately too flat for my old feet.
But, look at that floor!  This photo was taken in the meeting room at San Clemente Presbyterian Church during the Surfside Quilters Guild last Tuesday.  They must have just had their floors done.  Wonder if the floor guy would come do mine, but mine are vinyl rather than ceramic.
I'll probably miss a few days blogging, maybe more.  I am already over deadline on two quilts and am beset with guilt, so I must chain myself to my sewing machine and GET THEM FINISHED.

Wounded Warrior Quilts 10-10-13

Same blog, but Blogger tells me it cannot show these pictures.
I am leaving it up to see what happens to it by morning!  Read the next post, please.

Wounded Warrior Quilts at SQG 10-10-13

The usual problem, Blogger says there is something wrong and my pictures disappear.  Surely someone else has had this problem.  What did you do?

Surfside Quilters Guild is such an active, fun, happy quilt guild.  It meets in San Clemente and is a morning guild.  Too many of us are hesitant to drive on the freeway after dark.  It is scary out there!   One of the philanthropic projects is making quilts for wounded warriors to cover them while they are being transported from the field to aid stations, hospitals and home to the USA.  They need to be a certain size to fit the gurneys - 48"Wx78"L.  There is a group that meets every month other than guild meeting day to work on the quilts.  The chair puts a pattern in the newsletter asking for blocks and the members come through every month with stacks of quilts.  Most are red/white/blue, but they don't have to be.

This is the stack of quilts turned in at the October meeting.  Amazing, isn't it?
And here are five of those quilts held up for Show & Tell.  I feel guilty because I have only made two Wounded Warrior quilts and the second is still not finished.  I have started sewing again, but when I will get back to WWarrior is unknown.

I have no idea why the photos are arranged like this, but I am afraid to change them.

Good Food at Fitness Grill 10-08-13

When I heard the news of Lisa Quintana's failing health I was so down I needed to be with people.  Like so many bloggers I felt that Lisa was a very special lady and a cherished friend.   The only thing I could think to do was find someone to go to lunch with me.  I would be out of the house, not alone, and unable to let my mind dwell on the loss of a friend.  I called my friend Carol to find out that she and Teresa had a lunch date set up.  Carol invited me along and I was out the door.  We ended up talking for several hours and the wait staff kept telling us not to worry, we weren't in their way.  The conversation and the company of two of my "bookie" friends helped me deal with my sadness.
Fitness Grill in Yorba Linda has been in business for years and I have eaten there, but it is off my usual routes and I don't think of it as a possibility.  I will in the future.  The food was fresh and imaginative and the service friendly and timely.

Teresa enjoyed: Fitness Rolls - Blackened all natural chicken breast, caramelized onions, avocado, and ginger rolled in wheat tortillas and flash baked.
:

Carol ordered:  Spinach Chicken Wrap -  Blackened chicken, spinach-artichoke mix, low-fat mozzarella cheese and fresh spinach baked and wrapped in a spinach tortilla.  Served with a side of cucumber and ginger.

I had: Kinki Ahi Rolls - Seared Ahi, caramelized onions, avocado, red cabbage, lettuce, cilantro and ginger rolled in wheat tortillas and flash baked.

My  wrap came with a soy, ginger, oil, sesame seed dip.  But Teresa's plate came with a creamy dip that the waiter said contained ground macadamia nuts.  It was fantastic.

Monday Browsing 10-07-13

I'm still having problems with disappearing pictures - please let me know.

Some of you know of my fondness for cut paper and  popup books.  Elsa Mora is an artist who creates those books and many other amazing works:   http://www.artisaway.com/

Women artists do surrealist art:

The Int’l Quilt Study Center’s quilt of the month is an early 19th C quilt made from used clothing  http://www.quiltstudy.org/collections/quilt_of_the_month/
Included are two interesting videos about the construction of copies of the clothes used in the quilt.

If Congress only Quilted... SALE

Oh Congress...if only they were quilters! Perhaps then they would learn the value of community and listening to others and working together. We all might have different political views but we can all agree that quilting is special!

ALL FABRIC MARKED WITH A HELLO KITTY STAMP IS 25% OFF DURING THE DURATION OF THE SHUTDOWN.

Consider this our act of civil unification!

This explanation about plates amazed me.   I thought my mother’s rose plates were a luncheon set.

You will have to give your name and e-address to access this National Geographic site.  But, I assure you, it is worth it.  I started with the color Orange, since it is one of my favorite colors.   http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photos/life-color-orange/#/sandstone-patterns-lanting_59582_600x450.jpg

And here is the picture Picasa refused to let me post on 10-05-10

Frieda Anderson quilt new to TCQC 10-06-13

I'm not sure how clear these images are because my eyes are very tired from spendig waaaay too much time staring at the laptop screen.   My deadline is tomorrow and I am not quite finished, but I have to go to bed!

This is one of the 12-inch square quilts I bought at the VAM Veranda Sale in August.  The only reason I can think that nobody purchased it previously is the irregular border.  I can understand this sort of thing if it relates to the shapes in the design, but this does not.  These "shaped" quilts are hard to display - they look odd hanging alone on the wall, but even more out of place if hung with a group of 12x12 quilts.

"Jack Be Nimble"  Frieda Anderson  2010  12" x 12"
Hand dyed fabric by the artist, fused collage, machine quilted

Frieda is/was one of the Chicago School of Fusing ladies and her fusing technique is amazing.  No loose edges, no fraying.  Lovely curvaceous shapes.

She has used the pillowcase turn advocated by her friend Melody Johnson.
I don't know where this quilt was displayed that required the Velcro  spots, I'll have to see about removing them since I don't hang anything this way.

Very even and nicely done machine quilting.  I think she must use a longarm.

The label shows a lot of information, including an e-address.  I've always liked her logo using part of her name to form "Freestyle".  The machine applique here isn't very attractive.

Her signature is on the label, on the back of the quilt and in the quilting on the front of the quilt.

This picture of lenticular clouds above Estes Park, CO, in January 2012. has nothing to do with the government, quilting, fabric sales or Hello Kitty.  It is just a picture that I like.  Del

Blogger says my picture is not acceptable - so it might disappear.

Here is another of the same image.
