Work in Elizabeth Busch's class 03-12-16

Today I cut up my completely quilted and bound quilt "Red Fence".  I didn't get much further on it so you will have to wait to see any pictures.  I do have pictures of the work that the students are doing in class.

Beth's work.  Students who haven't taken Elizabeth Busch's class before were encouraged to make a color chart of the ten colors of paint concentrate we are using (upper left).

This is a very large piece that Beth did.  (Maybe 40 x 32)

Nandine's  work.  The two very light pieces are actually the backs which we all liked better than the fronts.

Nadine's original quilt on top, photo copies below, possibilities at bottom.

Karen's work. At top right are photocopies of the quilt she wants to change.

Karen's work.  This shows our individual pots of paint, a mixture of color concentrate and print paste (black lid with orange dot).  These are ProChem products.

Viviana's work.  Across the top photocopies of the quilt she wants to change.

This is one of Viviana's pieces.  A lot of our painting was done using the type of "spatula" on the right.  I think these are the tool used to tape wallboard together.

This is a beautiful piece done by Viviana. The white lines are where she put masking tape before doing any painting.

Carol's work.  Unfortunately Carol missed two days of class due to illness.

Andrea's work.  At top right are photocopies of the quilts she wants to change.

Elizabeth Busch's demo piece laid out on a table un-sewn.  The already quilted piece is at top right.

Another piece that Elizabeth is working on changing.

Elizabeth's demo piece using a different painting technique the mountains are made by masking with a torn piece of manila folder.

Today we started cutting things up and sewing.  More pictures tomorrow.

After class we went out together to a wonderful Greek restaurant "Fairouz" on Midway Dr.  I had a fabulous lamb dish and had to stop eating halfway it was so filling.  I'm going to have the leftovers for breakfast.  Don't forget to change your clock one hour ahead.

Painted "yardage" 03-11-16

This was the third day of the five day class I am taking with Elizabeth Busch.  The idea is to reconstruct a quilt or quilt top that we are not happy with.  To that end we have been painting to create yardage that we might, or might not, use to help reconstruct the quilt.  Fortunately I brought regular quilting fabric from home, because I don't see anything I've painted in the "new" quilt!  Tomorrow we start the cutting and sewing.  It will take a while, perhaps all day, to figure out just how we want to rearrange our quilt.

Elizabeth Busch reads to the students for inspiration.  Her work behind her.

On the first day of class we cut up the photocopies of the quilt/top we are interested in revising. These are the possible rearrangements I came up with.

These colors might work, but I don't know how this might work into the existing quilt.  I darkened the red after I took this picture.

We are learning how to use the transparent paint.  This is the back of a piece where I put coasters from Crate & Barrel under the cloth before painting.  The front is terrible, but the back has possibilities.

This is much darker than I thought it would be, but it has the right colors.

Preparing the canvas involves duct taping it to the table to hold it down while painting.  This piece has 1/4" masking tape blocking the paint and the duct tape around the outside.  The canvas shrinks as it absorbs the paint and will actually pull the tape from the table.

I did a few more pieces after I took these photos, I'll try to remember to photograph them and post them later.  I also have pictures of the design boards of the six other students to share with you.

Second day of class 03-10-16

This Elizabeth Busch class is about "recreating" a quilt or quilt top that just doesn't "work" for the maker.  I showed you my selection the other day.  As instructed I made five copies of  a picture of the quilt.  Here you see I am cutting up a couple of the pictures to rearrange the parts.  The pictures are all smaller than the quilts they represent, but it is a good  way to try out changes.

Here I have used three pieces of white paper to block out what a section of the fence would look like as triangles.

Across from the Visions Art Museum is Con Pane Bakery which surely has the best sandwiches in San Diego.  I went there for lunch today and sat outside on this truly gorgeous mid-winter day.
The building on the left is Barracks 19 and our class is upstairs in that building.  Fortunately for me, there is an elevator.

One thing I always notice these days when I am out and about, are the funny hair knots that people wear - both men and women as you can see in this image.  The guy with the white shirt has a "top knot" as does the blonde lady in black.  It is such an old fashioned hairdo that only old ladies used to wear.  On the right is a military guy - lots of military in San Diego and this place is close to the submarine base in the Bay.

At Home Tonight 03-08-16

I didn't blog last night because I had (as the Aussies say) a bit of a wog.  I thought it might be something I ate, but I checked with the others and nobody else was sick.  I had to miss the Surfside Quilters Guild meeting this morning, but I did go have the new crown on my tooth this afternoon.  I was only gone for about an hour.  I have been resting in between packing and loading the car and I'm feeling much better - just a few gurgles now and then.  Only tea, toast, yogurt and an egg.  Tomorrow I'm bound to be well.  YES!

I will drive back down San Diego in the morning to start a five day class with Elizabeth Busch.  It sounds like a very interesting class.  We are to bring a quilt (finished or not) that we like aspects of, but feel it just doesn't work.  And we have to decide ahead of time which one quilt it will be.  I have pretty much decided that "Red Fence" will be the one I will work on.   We will cut as needed, also paint, use pastels, attach other fabrics; whatever it takes to make it work.  I think one problem is too much the same values in the background.  We'll see.   But you won't see this quilt again!!

In San Diego tonight 03-06-16

I am in San Diego tonight, just for one night, tomorrow afternoon I will drive home.  Then I will drive back down on Wednesday morning to start a five day class with Elizabeth Busch. But I need to be at the Surfside QGuild meeting on Tuesday morning and I have a long awaited appointment with my dentist in the afternoon.

Driving down today I made the best time ever - 1 hour and 30 minutes.  Amazing.  The traffic was very light and there were almost no trucks.  I wonder if people stayed home because we had rain last night and early this morning and the weather guys  say it will rain tonight and tomorrow. As you see in the pictures it was a beautiful day.

Nice fluffy white clouds to give me a "cloud fix".

This is the view straight west at about 2:20pm. There is a slope down to the ocean.  The buildings are where the marines train for fighting in villages and towns.  This is within Camp Pendleton.

A little further on I can see the waves on the beach - to the right those same buildings.

I've had several people visiting CA tell me that the highways are the worst they have encountered.    I've seen some pretty rough roads in my travels, but I'm beginning to agree with our out-of-state guests.  This is a main intersection in San Diego - near the airport.  I took the picture while I was stopped at a signal.
