Even more quilts from Empty Spools 04-24-24

As I said last evening I didn't take as many pictures as I thought I had, or as I should have taken.  Perhaps someone  who reads this will  contact me and share pictures they took, especially the 12"X12" Bird quilts. Anyway, I will continue to  post the pictures I have.

These two 12"X12" by Terry Grant of Beaverton, Oregon, were hanging on a separate bulletin board from the others.
Cotton fabrics, cotton batting. Fused, machine applique, machine quilting.

"Making Quite an Entrance"  Yvonne Porcella - CA
Commercial cotton fabrics, hand-dyes.
Machine appliqued, pieced, and quilted. About 45" square.

One day I posted three crows and three owls, all 12"X12"

"The Raven - Nevermore"   Pamela Burns  2019
"Another Collector"  Diane Wright - CT  2012
"Everyone Loves a Party"  Diane Wright  CT  2015

"Borrowing Owl"  Linda Frost - KS  2019
"The Sentinel"  Judy Warren-Tippets - CA 2013
"Night Owl"  Judith Roderick  2011

12X12 quilts in the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection 5 08-27-23

I didn't realize time was slipping away from me and I didn't blog all week.  As always I will try to do better.

Here are six more 12X12 quilts in the Collection from the SAQA auctions over the years.  I do have quite a few  birds and will show more in a future post.  The 2023 SAQA Auction starts September 14.  You can see all 380 of the quilts at   www.saqa.com/auction and read how you can register and bid.   I always go through them all several times and make a list of those I am interested in.  This year there are 24 on my list.  Depends on the price and who is bidding,  but I will  probably acquire  3 or 4  new pieces for the Collection.

"Steller's Jay"  Terry Grant - Oregon  2011  12"X12"
Machine Pieced, Appliqued.  Machine Quilted.  Cotton Fabrics

"Night Owl"  Judith Roderick - New Mexico  2011  12"X12"

SAQA 2019 online quilt auction 08-25-19

Studio Art Quilt Associates 2019 auction will run Sep 13 through Oct 6.  There are 442 12"X 12" quilts so it takes quite a long time to look at them all.  I had to do it in sections over several days.  You can see them at:

I am happy to support SAQA which has done so much to promote and encourage art quilters and I usually bid on several pieces.  Most of the 12" bird quilts in the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection came from the auctions starting at the beginning.  Here are a few 12' X 12" pieces from past years.

"Bowerbird I"  Judith Roderick  2013

2013

"Taking a Break"  Lynn B. Welsch

"Another Collector"  Diane Wright  2012

2013

"Tillamook Rooster"  Terry Grant  2010

Some bird quilts on exhibit. 03-22-18

There is currently an exhibit of quilts depicting birds at Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove.  I am always attracted to images of birds in quilts and just about anywhere else.  If you are in the area, especially to attend Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar, do have a look.  There is a variety of techniques and styles and sizes, including Ruth McDowell's fabulous "A Rash of Flamingoes".   One of the great things about having a collection is sharing it with others.

Here are some of the 12"X12" quilts in the exhibit, most are from the SAQA online auctions.

Left to right and top to bottom:
"Red Hen" - Olga Norris/England (not in exhibit), "Walk the Line" - Doria Goocher/San Diego,CA, "Another Collector" (Magpie) - Diane Wright/Connecticut,  "The Crow's Story" - Olga Norris/England (not in exhibit),
  "Steller's Jay" - Terry Grant/Oregon, "Night Owl" - Judith Roderick/New Mexico, ,"Taking a Break" - Lynn Welsch/New Mexico,
 "From Above-Crows" - K.Velis Turan/New York, "Yellowheaded Blackbird" - Ruth Powers/Kansas, "In the Thicket" - Sonia Grasvik/Washington

Re-visit a quilt by Judith Roderick from 2011 07-19-17

This was a purchase from the SAQA 2011 online auction.  Since then I have purchased another at the 2013 SAQA online auction.  Another bird - Judith and I are equal bird lovers.  This was posted previously on 02-03-13.

"Night Owl"  Judith Roderick - Placitas, NM  2011 12"x12"
Whole cloth quilt done with soy wax and Tinfix dye.  Machine quilted.

Judith said, "This is my hand-painted silk image of a Petroglyph Owl, that was done with soy wax and Tinfix dye.  Machine-quilted and embellished with various buttons."

I do love birds and there are a number of bird quilts in the Collection.

He has such a great look on his face - sort of "who? me?"

Clawed grasping feet that are appropriate for an owl.

Judith has used the buttons on the owl very effectively, I'm not so sure about the green buttons, but they do add some "bling" to the piece.

The back is solid black so the quilting shows very well.

A very rudimentary label.  I looked her up in the SAQA directory so I do have her contact.

Another Judith Roderick quilt in TCQC 02-08-15

Here is another quilt from the SAQA 2013 online auction.  This is the second of Judith's quilts in the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  She likes to use lots of buttons which are related to the subject of the design.

"Bowerbird I"  Judith Roderick  2013  12"x12"
Cotton, silk, tulle, metallic paper, buttons.  Machine applique, machine quilting.

Some of the streamers are under the tulle and some on top.  They appear to all be strips of fabric. The red "flower" is cut from some sort of metallic paper.

This is the interior of the Bowerbird's bower.  The white flowers are cut from the metallic paper.

On the back you can see the extensive quilting.

Not much of a label and not very well attached.

"Night Owl" by Judith Roderick from TCQC 02-03-13

I discovered recently that I only posted three of the 12" square quilts I purchased at the 2011 SAQA online auction.  Apologies to all the artists.  I will be showing them for the next month or so.

I want to urge you to try to see the "Brainstorms" exhibit at Visions Art Museum in San Diego.  It closes February 17th.  There are some great quilts on the walls.
