Ruth Carden quilt posted 11-15-15

This is the third of the four quilts I bought at the SAQA online  auction this fall.

"Green Gazebo"  Ruth Carden   2015   12"X12"
Cotton hand-dyed fabric, cotton batting, machine pieced and machine quilted.
As frequently happens the picture is more blue than the actual quilt which is many values of green.  And that is what I like about this piece, it is very calm and soothing  - great color.

Quilted with many different motifs.  I  believe there are both cotton and rayon threads.

It is to be hung with the corner triangle method.

Not much of a label - no contact for the artist.

I don't find a website, but here are a couple sites that show Ruth's work.

A Funky Chicken from Kristin Shields 11-01-15

I only bid on four quilts at the SAQA online auction this fall.  The special $1000 starting spree turned me off and, to be blunt, I didn't see a lot of pieces that impressed me.  This time I bought "names" instead of impressions.

"Funky Chicken"  Kristin Shields - Bend, OR 2015  12"X12"
Machine pieced, hand appliqued, machine quilted, embellished with sewing  threads and embroidery floss.
Another bird for my bird collection and the 2nds of Kristin's pieces in TCQC.  She does beautiful hand embroidery and very nice work in general.

Great fabric on the back.  I always like "fancy" backs, so it is a special surprise to find this on the back of one of the auction quilts.

Nice, easy to read label with a contact so I can check out her other quilts and see when there is something new I might be interested in buying.

The pictures above are fairly representational of the actual colors, but these final two are waaaay off.  The blue of the bird is much greener and there is no pink on the front of the quilt.  But I want to show Kristin's nice even hand embroidery and the successful machine quilting.

A wing...

...and a head.

Revisiting TCQC quilts 10-04-15

I think I will revisit some of the quilts I have posted in the past.  This quilt with parrots was a SAQA Auction quilt in 2010.  The SAQA online auction is going on now.  Check it out at: http://www.saqa.com/auction-quiltviewALL.php
I've added a number of bird quilts to the Collection since 2010, enough to have an exhibit of just birds, including Diane  Wright's crow from section two of this year's auction.

 Parrots in TCQC 12-12-10
Here is another purchase from the SAQA online 2010 auction. It caught my eye immediately - the images are so crisp and the color is perfectly 'parrot-y'. Sherry likes to watch the large flock of parrots that live in her area, as I like to watch those that live in the city of Orange.
"Treetop Parrots of the Palisades" Sherry Kleinman 2010 12" x 12"
Painted, machine pieced, machine quilted.
Sherry says about her piece: "Treetop Parrots of the Palisades" was inspired by the many free flying parrots (former pets) flying around my neighborhood here in Pacific Palisades. My piece is painted with water-soluble media (crayons and pencils) on raw canvas and then machine stitched."
The tiny red buttons add texture and color.

But I'm not so sure about the lady bug and bee buttons. I find them distracting.
Sherry has done dense quilting over the entire design and the piece is very flat.

The backing fabric appears to be a hand dye, but it might be a batik - I can't tell for sure.
This is a great addition to the Collection. I am a bird lover and have made a number of bird quilts in the past. However, I haven't found a lot of bird quilts to add to the Collection, I hope this is the first of many.
