Lunch at the harbor in San Diego 11-24-12

On Wednesday I drove down to San Diego to learn more about the quilts in the "Brainstorms" exhibit at Visions Art Museum.   I have several session scheduled to serve as a docent, so I'd better study up on the artists and their quilts.   It was a fast track down there - it only took an hour and a half.  Since the schools were closed and many companies closed down for the Thanksgiving holiday there was not much traffic going south on I-5.  However, I knew that coming home in the afternoon would be slow, and it was.   Three hours and twenty minutes on the road, much of it at 10mph.  But I knew it would be that way and was prepared to be patient.  There were a few fender benders and one large accident which had the southbound I-5 narrowed to one lane - of course, all the ghouls going north had to slow or stop to see the accident.  As soon as they get past they hit the gas and try to get in front of everyone else.  Weird.  I never look for fear I will see a gory sight that I will never forget.

With a friend I had lunch at another very good restaurant - Island Prime on the harbor.
The food  was excellent and the service the best I have experienced in quite a long time. (I had the crab cakes which came with a small salad and my friend had a French Dip sandwich with skinny, skinny onion rings that were fantastic). We shared a dessert - Key Lime Pie - I think the best I've ever eaten.  I thought that CPK served a good one, but this was even better.  It is, however, twice as much as I could ever eat, so I was happy I had a friend.

The excellent company and the delicious food was enhanced by a drop dead view of downtown San Diego on the left and Coronado Island and the navy ships on the right.  In the distance is the Coronado Bridge stretching over the water.

Ellen Oppenheimer quilt in TCQC

This is the second of Ellen Oppenheimer's quilts in Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  This one is from the online sale at San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles this month.  There are other works on their online shop until December 9th at:   http://www.sjquiltmuseum.org/gallery_highfiber_paypal2012.html
Some works by well known artists and some by emerging artists - a couple Pamela Allen pieces are left.

"PW Block Study 1"  Ellen Oppenheimer - Oakland, CA  2004  15.5" square
This is a whole cloth quilt - silk screen printed.
The only quilting is a machine stitched line from top to bottom and from side to side.
The front and back have turned edges and are knife edge stitched.

One quarter of the quilt shows the different colors printed using the same screens.

The back is also screened with the diagonal stripes done first and then overlayed with the pink Greek key design.  The velcro strip at the top will have to be removed since I don't use this hanging method.

A handwritten label fused to the back.  Unfortunately no contact.

I don't find a website for Ellen, but here are a few sites with info about her.

Items from SQG live auction 11-17-12

This was the big money maker at the live auction.  It is a charming quilt with blocks made by various guild members.  I did not add it to TCQC - the winning bidder started the bidding high so I knew she was going to have it at any cost.  She told me afterward how much she will cherish this quilt.

PieceMakers quilt.  62" wide x 78 1/2" high Blocks by SQG Members, machine and hand applique. Machine Assembled by Joann Bishop, Mary Freedman and Nancy Ota.   Machine Quilted by Nancy Burch, cotton batt. Binding by Joann Bishop.

.
Backart assembled by Mary Freedman.  Label, machine pieced and hand embroidered by Nancy Ota.

Tote by Nancy Ota 25" wide x 19" high

I had the high bid on this cute pillow made by Jan Hirth.  I teased her that Corky would love it, but, of course, Corky has his own pillows - this one is for me.

I also won the bid on a very nice 1950's applique of red poppies on a white ground. I cannot seem to transfer a picture from the SQG website, so to see you it you will have to visit the following site where you will see all the lovely things that were auctioned on Tuesday.
