Quilts by Linda Colsh in TCQC 08-19-18

I am attracted by the work of Linda Colsh and there are four of her quilts in TCQC.  Part of the attraction must be the mystery the quilts present.  They depict places and things that I don't recognize and I am always looking closely for a clue to the juxtaposition of the different motifs in each quilt.   I have presented each of these quilts on my blog previously, so you can click on Linda's name in the right sidebar if you want to know what I have said before.
Linda's website is:  https://lindacolsh.com/

"Ewe Alone"  Linda Colsh  2007   26" X 26"

"Grand Tour"  Linda Colsh  2007  12"X12"

"Gentle Reminder"  Linda Colsh  2008   12"X12"

"Run Bright and Reflect"  Linda Colsh 2015  20"W X 59"L
This was part of an exhibit at Visions Art Museum in San Diego in 2015.  It was one of seven pieces that followed a theme of Linda's walks along a stream at different times of the year.  Below are pictures she took for inspiration.   The stones were actual stones that she traced around and painted onto the white background.

These were taken near Middletown, MD, where Linda lives.

"Liberty" by Kathleen McCabe - Coronado, CA 09-10-11

This quilt was purchased for the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection at the SAQA 2008 online auction.  It is only 10"W x 11.5"L, so smaller than the standard 12x12 auction quilts.  When bidding on auction quilts it is important to check the size and also if the quilt is mounted or framed - in case those things make a difference to you!
Remember that the SAQA 2011 online auction starts on Monday, Sept 12th.
To learn how the auction works see  http://www.saqa.com/news.php?ID=1186
"Liberty"  Kathleen McCabe - Coronado, CA  2008  10"W x 11.5"L
Cotton fabric, machine applique, machine quilting.

Kathleen's original technique uses small rectangular "tiles" to create the texture on her portrait quilts.  In this quilt I especially like the G-clef used to show a curl in Liberty's hair.

This is a wonderful collection of black and white fabrics.

There is some net in the upper left of this closeup - I have never remembered to ask Kathleen about it when I see her.  I don't see her often, just when I get to San Diego where she is very active in Visions.

Both black and white threads are used for the quilting.

Quilt from TCQC by Polly Bech 05-07-11

"Breaking Through" Polly Bech  - Pennyslvania  2008 12" x 12"
Purchased from SAQA 2008 online auction

Polly Dressler Bech specializes in sunprints and stamping on her quilts.  As you can see she has also used raw edge slices to expose the color underneath the top layer.

And she has added hand stitching for additional color.

Great backing fabric and a very simple label.

A 12 X 12 quilt from SAQA auction by K. Velis Turan 03-20-11

This quilt is from the 2008 SAQA online auction.

" From Above - Crows"  K. Velis Turan - New York  2007  12" X 12"

Cotton fabrics, cotton and rayon threads.  Dyed/painted, beads, metal embellishments.  Pieced border.
I especially admire the border - two similar sides and two wildly different sides.  The crows are applied by machine stitches.
Very detailed embellishment with some metal rings centered with beads and others not.

The back is certainly something that has been in K.Velis' 'fabric library' for quite a few years.  I'm guessing it is a print from the mid 1990s.
I'm intrigued by this quilt and enjoy trying to figure out the methods and techniques she used.   There is an article about her in the Feb/Mar 2011 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine and one of her pieces is on the cover.  You can also see her work on her website www.kvelisturan.com

SAQA Auction is open 11-10-08

Please check out the Studio Art Quilt Associates auction at
There are wonderful small (12" square) quilts being offered, some made by very well know quilters and some made by quilters we have yet to know. This is SAQA's major fund raiser for the year 2009.
