At Camp Del again. 12-01-11

Not a newsy night here.  Corky is here for a few nights.  Can dogs look older?  I think Corky looks older in this picture!  He had a bath yesterday and looks so sparkly white.

The terrible wind storm damage is mostly in the San Gabriel Valley (Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, etc.)  Haven't heard about damage at Huntington Gardens or Descanso Gardens - both in the same area.  But there are hundreds of thousands without power tonight, I hope they have lots of blankets.
We did have wind in Orange County, but no damage that I have heard of.  The tree trimmer did my trees about a month ago, so they have lots of holes for the wind to blow through.  For the weekend it is supposed to be in the 60s with 39 to 43 at night.  And diminishing winds.

Another mysterious 'thing' 11-29-11

I don't know why I notice odd things, I just do.  Several years ago I posted this on this Blog:
http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=3236658054810119404&postID=7716549533745949564
And a year or two ago I noticed the same phenomena, the "fairy" in the trashcan on just about the same day of the year.   Obviously the trashcan was in about the same location - and still is!

The other day in a parking lot I went to put the key in the car ignition and saw this mysterious light.  Another 'fairy' only this time in the key hole of my car!  How did that get in there?

I moved my hand around to find the light source and discovered that this light is coming through the side window which was partially down.  Why the light was shining at this angle I don't know - I have not seen this before and find it a bit spooky.  I hope I don't see it again.

Delicious Food 11-28-11

I've collected these pictures over the past month or so.  Every food was simply delicious.
Dessert tarts - blueberry, raspberry and honeydew melon - with flaky, buttery crust and a rich creamy custard filling.  Served at an event at the Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum at the Fullerton Arboreteum   http://fullertonarboretum.org/museum_nikkei.php  these tasty bits come from "Frost My Cake" in Brea, CA.  www.frostmycakebakery.com

Lemon Cream & Berries on a folded authentic Belgium Waffle.  Fantastic dessert from Bruxie.  It is a "street food" place that started on Glassell near Chapman University and has recently expanded to a second location in Brea on Brea Blvd.   http://bruxie.com/   All is not sweet - they have many savory offerings.  I enjoy the Bacon/Egg/Cheese, but my favorite, which is not on the regular menu, is Green Eggs and Ham which is spread with a yummy pesto sauce.

One of the best lunches I have enjoy lately was that served at the Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest under the direction of LeAnn Goettel.  A very tasty Greek Salad with a side of orzo/pine nut pilaf, a freshly made Bastilla triangle and the best apple cake ever with a dollop of cinnamon whipped cream.  There were also trays of nut breads.

Fresh from the ovens are three trays of Bastilla, a traditional Moroccan dish made with phyllo, chicken, nuts, spices.

Ikiru is a sushi bar near the Visions Art Museum in San Diego.  They serve good traditional sushi and this heavenly green tea ice cream.  And what a lovely presentation - the polka dot bowls are perfect!

Roseanna Lynn Welter quilt from TCQC 11-27-11

This quilt was part of "My World in Black & White", the first exhibit sponsored by the Fiberarts Connection of Southern California.  It was quite a good unjuried exhibit that showed in half a dozen venues around SCalifornia.  I added a few of the quilts to the Collection, but not this one.  However, it kept "haunting" me and some months later I contacted the maker to purchase it.
It is a monoprint done with dye dipped string, a technique that was taught in children's art classes years ago (and maybe even today), but one that I was not familiar with.  The artist has enhanced the loops and arcs of the monoprint with black machine stitching that gives the appearance of sea fans or coral.  Or perhaps the debris on a storm ravaged beach.   The end pieces look amazingly like surf on sand.  I thought the scribbly quilting was odd at the time, but in the years since it has become some quilters' signature quilting style.
"After the Storm"  Roseanna Lynn Welter  2001  33"W x 45"L
Monoprinting.  Machine piecing and quilting.  Cotton fabric and thread.

Following and filling in the loops and arcs of the monoprinting.

Surf on sand with scribble quilting.

The artist intended this to be a horizontal quilt, but I much prefer it as a vertical, so I added a muslin sleeve to one end.   Which prevents me from hanging the quilt face-to-the-wall and enjoying the mystical image on the back.

You can see that Rosanna Lynn was undecided about a title and added "After the Storm" to the label - it was that name that was used on the entry for the "My World in Black & White" exhibit.
