Instructions on the Road 04-23-15

I am always reading license plates and see some funny ones, but I can't always take a picture.  I smile at those that give instructions to other drivers.

 

 

 

I haven't left on my Road Trip yet, but I will be looking out for sassy license plates.

Getting ready for a road trip 04-20-15

I'll be on the road again for the next few weeks.  First to San Juan Bautista, then to Portland for the Studio Art Quilt Associates conference, followed by a visit to upstate Washington to visit Mabel, Mac, Reynola and Suzanne.  Then I will need to hightail it home to be at the SQG May meeting. 

I'm looking forward to visiting friends along the way and enjoying the TREES that I miss so much in SCalifornia.  I will try to blog every day and share my travels with you, but don't  worry if I miss a post now and then, I get very tired these days and need to limit the distance I drive in one stretch.

Quilt by Charlotte Bird in TCQC 04-19-15

This quilt was part of a project done by Charlotte Bird and a quilt making friend in which they randomly chose words from a dictionary and each created a small quilt to "illustrate" the word.  These exercises turned into a nice small exhibit in the Valya Gallery at Visions Art Museum several seasons ago.

Sun printing, machine piecing and applique, hand stitching.

Charlotte has used seed stitches and running stitch for the surface marking.

I am surprised there are no French knots as she is very fond of them.

Nice clear label with a signature and a CONTACT so someone can reach her to ask about other quilts she might have for sale. 

The blue here is deceptive - it is actually a dark blue marbled fabric.  I like it when the artist does not cover up the stitches on the back.  More authentic this way.  Hand stitched.

In San Diego tonight. 04-18-15

I feel that I have spent a week driving on I-5.  Last Sunday and  Wednesday to San Diego and back, today to San Diego and Tuesday and Wednesday to San Clemente.   I decided driving home in the dark tonight was more than I could handle, so am staying  at Homewood Suites near Visions Art Museum.  This evening was the opening reception for the new exhibit - six artists and 64 challenge quilts.  The place is stuffed with art.  I am particularly fond of Karen Rips work and she has seven pieces hanging - they look great.  Check out the artists being featured:  http://www.visionsartmuseum.org/

I'll be driving home in the morning and maybe it will be clear enough to take some more ocean views.  It was a little too hazy and too much traffic on the way down today.

Workshop with Mary Lou Weidman 04-16-15

A terrific workshop with Mary Lou Weidman yesterday.  She had been the speaker at the Surfside QGuild meeting the day before and had a full workshop with a waiting list.  She is a good teacher, well prepared and attentive to her students. 

 

Mary Lou and Del in front of "Asilomar/Pacific Grove", the Mary Lou quilt that is part of the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  We hung it at the workshop so everyone could get a good look.

This is part of another quilt that Mary Lou showed and I was taken with the flower on the right.

 

Here is my version sans stem and birdie.  I want to  put some leaves on the stem and ran out of time in the workshop.

 

This was the first project to learn the Hoochy Momma style of piecing that Mary Lou uses. 

 

 

Then we did a tulip in a pot.  And went on to try other flower blocks.  You can see how large the flowers are in the picture below.

Mary Lou Weidman 04-14-15

Mary Lou Weidman presented the program at Surfside Quilters Guild in San Clemente, CA, today.  She is a dynamic and humorous speaker who I highly recommend for any guild - traditional or art. She speaks extemporaneously and does a trunk show of some of her quilts.  I'm taking her workshop tomorrow. 

This quilt is a sampler for her "Flower Power" workshop, the one she will teach tomorrow.



Many of her quilts have "critters" in them - like this crazy chicken.

 

Thia is "Duck, Duck, Moose" one of the new patterns in her latest book.

 

And here is an entire town of houses done as part of a group who exchanged house and tree blocks.
