THE PASSING OF VIRGINIA AVERY – "On September 6, 2012, Virginia Avery passed away three weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Over her long and illustrious career, Jinny Avery collected many awards and accolades, including the Silver Start Award at the Houston International Quilt Festival and induction into the Quilters Hall of Fame. But more than anything, she was a generous teacher, friend, and colleague. She was especially well-known for her dramatic wearable art. To this day, when I see a creatively put-together outfit in black, white and red (Jinny's favorite color combination) I think of her. Jinny was a renaissance woman. Along with raising a fine family, teaching many thousands of students, writing many books and magazine articles and creating fiber art of all kinds, she also was a fantastic jazz pianist [she played in a jazz band most of her adult life]. If there was a piano in the corner of the hall, community center or schoolroom where an event was being held, Jinny would soon be playing and the audience would usually get up and dance. She was full of energy, enthusiasm and delight in all things artistic. She was truly one of the Founding Mothers of the Quilting World and will be greatly missed."  Posted by Diane Herbort in Quilters Unlimited newsletter
