Wordless Wednesday - with words! 04-05-17

Sometimes KoKo guards the back, but mostly he sits in the window that looks out on the front porch and barks at people going by. If anyone should have the temerity to step up on the porch he goes into his whirling dervish routine and piles up the runner in the hallway. The mail carrier is usually the culprit. We had to shorten our walk again tonight because there are still yahoos setting off fireworks which make KoKo shiver and shake and run for home. To avoid having my arm pulled out of the socket I picked him up and carried him home.

KoKo doesn't like July 4th 07-04-17

It was a quiet 4th of July here in Orange County California, except for the fireworks which had KoKo in a tizzy. When we walked at 7pm (84F) there were already booms and bangs and he didn't want any part of it. He strained at the leash to head for home until I had to pick him up and carry him lest he tear my arm out of the socket. All the rest of the evening he was on me like another skin, so I had to sit and hold him, talking and petting and soothing. He seemed to want to be on my head and he climbed up on the back of my recliner, something he has never done before. For a while I wrapped him in his quilt while I held him, which seemed to help. I had read about this online somewhere. They make special 'bundling' coats for dogs, but I don't want to invest in one for one day a year. Needless to say, he didn't get a bath today - tomorrow, for sure.

It is very hot again, running in the high 80s and low 90s. A little early in the summer for that kind of heat, but not unheard of. I am still not quilting and it looks like I will miss another deadline. Gotta get control of that lack of creativity soon or I will forget how to sew.

Meanwhile, I have finished the Surfside Quilters Guild newsletter. A whole week late this time. I will do better in future months. The meeting is next Tuesday, already!

A Lovely Field Trip 07-01-17

Yesterday I went on a "field trip" with two quilting friends. It wasn't all that quilterly, but we had a nice time and enjoyed each other's company.

We started with a visit to the Purl SoHo warehouse in Irvine. I had never been and had expected a larger location, but they are moving this coming week, into larger quarters. Their new address will be 2302 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA 92606 800/597-7875 Open to the public most Tuesdays - Fridays 9am - 3:30pm. They have many fascinating things - some fabric (including Liberty), yarn, thread, kits, notions, scissors, weaving equipment, embroidery materials, and on and on. This facility is where all the orders are filled, although their actual store is in NYC.

Afterward we drove down by John Wayne Airport to have lunch at Benihana's. We drove a roundabout way because of the airplane wreck on the 405 freeway right at the end of the airport runway. But it was worth the meandering because the lunch was fun and delicious. I had a doggy box to bring home for dinner last night. I haven't been to a Benihana's for many years, at least twenty, and it won't be a regular stop for me because it is expensive, but it was entertaining and we three enjoyed it.

Finally we visited the The Irvine Museum located at 18881 Von Karman Ave, Suite 100, Irvine, CA 92612 949/476-0294. They show mostly California art, especially Plein Air from the 20's/30's. Currently the exhibit is night and early morning paintings, mostly expansive landscapes and almost all oil on canvas or board. Some wonderful views. There is not admission charge and they even validated our parking. It was very quiet until we were about to leave when a large group of teenagers came in, all wearing "Upward Bound" tees and they were as quiet as they could be!

We sat in the lobby of the building, watching the business people come and go with their cell phones and computer bags. We spent an hour talking about quilty things and enjoying our own company. Then it was a drive home, avoiding the airport nearby. I didn't have any delay in traffic, but crossed above the 405 and could see the scene of the crash in the south bound lanes and the jam up in the northbound lanes - as far north and south as I could see.

It was a day to remember.

Friday Feet 06-30-17

I don't usually identify the feet that I post. But this post is directly attributed to Kathleen Probst who posted her images on Facebook. They made me laugh. Del

This is Kathleen's explanation:

Sometimes you just have to laugh. This afternoon I was dyeing fabric with my table top washer, in my laundry room. I did not climb up on my stool to look at the dials, like I usually do. There are only two dials. I accidentally turned the dial to drain the machine, instead of the one to agitate. Imagine my surprise when hot teal water gushed out of the drain hose, not aimed into a bucket because I was just starting the process, not finishing up. Our white laundry room was soaked and spattered in dark teal. I did not take a picture of the mess, I rushed to clean it up. I thought you might enjoy this evidence of the crime scene.😳😳

Glorious Day Lilies 06-27-17

I am very impressed with the care that went into plant selection at the Leisure World in Laguna Woods. Who ever did the planning seems to have gone all out for colorful trees, shrubs, perennials, and vines and massed them in ways to show off the flowers. Right now the day lilies are in full bloom and there are lots of my favorite yellows.
