More PIQF 10-17-10

All of the pictures in yesterday's Blog and today's Blog were taken by Mary Leakey. If you would like to see some of the prize winning quilts go to: http://tinyurl.com/2dooxh9 That is a shortcut to Alex Anderson/Rick Tims site.

This first quilt is very special to me because it records Rhonda and Charlene's annual journeys to Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA. I have been going for twenty years and have some of the same memories, although my journey has always been north and theirs has been south.

The white chain is, of course, to keep people from stepping on the bottom of the quilt if they move up close to see the detail.
Along the roadway they have put the names of teachers they have studied with and a few blocks of something that represents the teachers specialty. Beside Ruth McDowell's name are some nature blocks since Ruth's class is "Designing from Nature". The "Dancing with Doreen" remembers Doreen Speckman who one year taught all comers to Merrill Hall (where the evening programs are held) to do the Electric Slide.

For several years there was a quilt contest every year and at least one year a wearable art contest - commemorated by the model with jackets and vests hanging on her arms. On the roadway below her are "Gerry Kimmel and Linda Branock," represented by traditional tree and house blocks. At the bottom of the quilt the roadway shows pieced blocks, including a pieced frog, which represent Rachel Clark's classes in wearable art. I especially like the border quilted with curling waves - just like the Asilomar Beach adjacent to the Conference Grounds. I've heard a lot of people talk about doing an Asilomar quilt, but this is only about the third one I have seen. I wonder if they share the quilt by handing it over every six months or so.

These very realistic animals are wonderful and their pedestal is great. June did a very good job.

A quilt from one of my perennial favorites, Nancy Brown. Her hand applique is awesome and she always gets the animals perfectly. WOW! She gets better every year.

Here is a detail of the lion. Just look at the variety of fabrics she has used.
On a personal note: I am feeling much better this evening, but will have to take it easy so that I will be well to go to the Visions opening in Oceanside next weekend. The cough is less, but still with me. However, I have more energy and was even hungry! I'll be back to PTherapy on the 27th. Thanks for all your good thoughts and support.
