ZOOMING! 06-09-20

This morning Surfside Quilters Guild held their first ZOOM meeting on the regular meeting day and time.  And 107 members checked in!  It was so wonderful to see those familiar faces and hear those familiar voices.  Thanks to everyone who came!  Some of us need to learn a little more about ZOOMing, but generally it worked well, I thought.

I don't understand how the member views are arranged.  President Mary Arter remained in the upper left corner of my screen the entire time.  And my view was right next to hers.   Because I clocked in early?  Or does my image move around on the screens of others?  We had an educational presentation by Jean Impey on the printing of fabric as done by Hoffman Fabrics.  It was mostly about making batiks, which I found very interesting.  She works at Hoffman and used professional slides from their archives.   We also presented our outgoing president, Monica Shafer, with her president's quilt which reflects her love of all things Hawaiian.  Good meeting.  Hope to see you all next month.

Friday Food 12-07-18

The small art quilt group "Arty Girls" met today for our Christmas Lunch at The Farmhouse at Rogers Gardens in Newport Beach.  We met here a year ago on Dec 8, 2017, and discovered we could make a reservation a year ahead and did so.  Coincidentally, we had the same table and the same waitress this year as we did last.  Meant to be, I guess.   The Farmhouse is a "Field to Table" sort of place so much of the food is locally grown.  The selections are unique and delicious, I recommend it.  Although it is expensive.  My lunch alone, just the salad and the dessert was $46.  But it is worth it once in awhile. 

This is the Shrimp, Scallop, veggie salad. With butternut squash and carrots, caramelized cauliflower, arugula, raspberry vinaigrette, pureed satsumaimo sweet potatoes, pomegranate seeds , and lovely little blue flowers.  This is Bonnie's plate.

Grilled Pomegranate Glazed Salmon Salad with roast butternut squash, pink lady apples, roast leeks, cherry tomatoes, quinoa, mixed lettuces, Dijon vinaigrette, candied pecans, pomegranate seeds.  This was Patti's plate. 

This is the pizza of the day and the only thing I know about it is that is has cheese and bacon.  And Monica said it is very good. 

Here is another view of a Shrimp, Scallop, veggie salad which is described above.  Bonnie and I had the same meal, but her flowers were prettier.  I ate mine. 

For dessert Patti ordered the Carrot Cake in a Mason jar.  It is only three or four bites, which is probably as much as one wants after such a large salad.  

I, on the other hand, pigged out on the Toasted Almond Cake

with pomegranate honey sauce,  poached pear, sweet cream and slivered almonds.

Worth every bite. 

The gardens were lovely, all washed clean with yesterday's rain.  I took a pass on visiting the gift shop with a FABULOUS display of every kind of ornament one could possibly desire.  I am just not into Christmas.  There were a lot of people there, perhaps because everyone had stayed home in yesterday's storm.  

We did exchange gifts, I managed to have finished all three fiber postcards and will post them later.  The ladies seemed to like them and I love the fabric and books I received.  Altogether a lovely day.

Patriotic Quilts at Surfside Quilters Guild 07-12-11

There were some great red, white and blue quilts at the Surfside Quilters Guild meeting today.  We have just this month started providing quilts for Wounded Warriors, a group devoted to having each wounded service person covered with a quilt when they are transported from a conflict area to a stateside or European based hospital.  Those quilts should be 48" x 78" to fit on the gurneys.  But these different sized quilts are great inspirations. http://patrioticheartstringsquiltingproject.blogspot.com/

"Chains of Friendship" a pattern by Lyn Brown.  This quilt has her "Borders on Blocks" technique which builds the borders onto the blocks before they are assembled.

"Old Glory"  Lyn Brown pattern  64"W x 46"L (but it could be made larger or smaller with re-sized blocks)

"Hooray, U.S.A" -  Judy de Gruy showed this at Show & Tell.  She made it for her red, white & blue patriotic guest room.   It was quilted by Carol Kaplan.

Monica Shafer shared this quilt from a pattern featured on the cover of American Patchwork and Quilting. It was one of the first quilts that she made.

"Patriotic Star" wallhanging made by Maggie Bell from a pattern by Judy Hasselkus.  (not a good picture, sorry!)  This piece is about 18" square.
