A Very Special Class 09-27-14

Summer Walk, Elizabeth Busch  http://www.elizabethbusch.com/

One of the artists I have admired for a long time is Elizabeth Busch.  She mostly does very large pieces, larger than anything I can accommodate, so I don't own any of her quilts.  She is innovative and tries different directions with great success.  Her quilt, "Summer Walk" is part of Quilt Visions 2014: The Sky's The Limit, the biennial international exhibit at the Visions Art Museum, San Diego from October 3rd to January 4th.  Many of the artists are planning to attend the opening weekend events, October 11th and 12th.  Elizabeth Busch will be at the opening and has agreed to stay over to present a five-day class titled "The Painted Quilt".  I think I was the first to sign up!  I'll have to stay in San Diego, but I can't pass up this chance to study with an expert.  There are still openings in the class, which will be held across the street from Visions Art Museum.  Think about it, it is a rare opportunity.  Here are the details:

 The Painted Quilt
5-day worshop with Elizabeth Busch
October 13-17, Monday-Friday, 9:30-5:00
$525, all levels, sewing machine needed

Using ProChem's textile paints and student's already painted or dyed fabric combined with commercial fabric, Elizabeth will demonstrate how you can create two to three quilt tops during the workshop, each about 24 x 24 inches. She will share her inspirations and how one piece feeds the next in a series. The focus will be on scale and impact, design composition and use of color. You will paint half the time and sew half the time. There will be plenty of opportunities for individual instruction.

Elizabeth's quilt, Summer Walk, was juried into Quilt Visions 2014: The Sky's The Limit and will be featured on the cover of the catalog for the exhibition.

Class will be held at the Barracks 17 Event Space across the street from Visions Art Museum. There is plenty of free parking. Call the museum to register, 619-546-4872.

A materials fee of $60 includes all textile paints, some scrapers, containers, paper for exercises, individual design wall for each student and miscellaneous equipment. A supply list will be emailed upon registration.

Playing on the computer 09-25-14

Playing on the computer is like playing with any creative object.  I use Picasa and can do all sorts of things with the editing options.   Along with the original images these are the pictures that were on my "Wordless Wednesday" post yesterday.  The pictures were "pixelated", but they could have been posterized or inverted colors or shown Duo-toned or using a Heat Map.  Doing this playing makes one see things in a different way, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes unsuccessful and sometimes spectacular.  Just try different images because they don't all lend themselves to this process.  I imagine it is even more fun in Photoshop, but I still have not learned that program.

Be sure to make a copy(ies) of the original and play with the copy(ies).

Nebraska Quilt Shops 09-23-14

While I was on my Road Trip to Indiana I was following the "Row by Row" nationwide quilt hop.  The lists, by state, were available online for all the shops participating in the project.  You'll need to look at the website if you are interested in details. http://www.rowbyrowexperience.com/
This was, I believe, the third year and each year it is larger.  Unfortunately, several of the states I visited did not have any shops participating.  Locally Flying Geese Quilt Shop was a participant.  I enjoyed seeing different shops and shopping for fabric for myself and for Surfside QGuild philanthropy; which wasn't really necessary, because they have had an influx of fabric from several quilter's estates.
They are now VERY well supplied.

This shop in Lincoln was difficult to find, partially because the short end of the building faces the major street and I passed it by several times before finding a building with a street number on it.

They had lots of  "modern fabrics" and several displays showing quilts and other projects  made from the fabrics displayed, along with patterns.

The "Quilt Basket" in York, Nebraska, was MUCH easier to find because it is a tiny town with one main east/west street lined with businesses.  Unfortunately, a great many of the buildings appeared to be empty and there were lots of  For Lease signs around.   This is quite a nice shop with a second room for the long-arm machines.  There were many completed quilts hanging as examples and the fabric supply was extensive and varied.  Except for the sale fabrics (which were generally cheaper than Orange County shops) the prices everywhere were comparable to what we find locally.

Getting a step up on the holidays the shop was showing lots of holiday quilts.  I like this Santa quilt, but think I would have turned the guy on the left to face the center.

Below is a Halloween quilt like the one that Linda Ambrosini made for our November Fest live auction.  Love the candy corn border!

Monday Browsing 09-22-14

Here is a site for knitters – lots  of free patterns, gorgeous yarns: http://brownsheep.com/
I have not done much browsing, being busy with other things.  One of which is the album of the quilts that will be offered at a live auction at the Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest on November 11th.  There may be a few more quilts added in the next few weeks, so check back later.

Deb Mackay quilt in TCQC 09-21-14

This is another 12"X12" quilt I purchased at the silent auction held during the Sip, Savor and Stroll fundraiser at Visions Art Museum last week.  This was an entry into the Hand Dyed challenge, but there are also indications of the Sue Benner workshop held at the museum earlier this year.

"Blue Bird of Happiness" Deb Mackay 2014  12"X12"
Hand-dyed cotton fabric, fused,  machine quilted.
The tying off "tassels" on the corners are a Sun Benner technique.
I like the layers of different shapes - it almost looks 3 dimensional.

Love the blue feathers.  Notice the overcast edge done in different colored threads.

No actual label, just identified in long hand on the backing fabric.

Deb is a dyer and does a lot of marbling, this may have been from her earlier years of dyeing.
