Saturday Stories - Pomegranates 08-26-17

When Diane and her sister Marie were living with their grandparents in Los Angeles during WWII they prowled the neighborhood with their school friends.  The street dead ended into Poppy Peak which seemed enormously tall to us.  There was a trail to the top through cactus and chapperel, but they were not permitted to climb it alone.  Once when they went with their uncle they saw tarantulas and there were rattlesnakes in the rocks.    Their grandparents house had an alley along the back where the one car garages were located.  They knew all the neighbors and their animals - dogs, cats, goats, chickens, rabbits.  One house had a pomegranate tree that hung over the back fence and the kids helped themselves to every pomegranate that grew on the alley side of the fence.  Sometimes they even reached under the fence and stole a few more.  The only things Diane can remember they did with them was to eat them out of hand or juice them in the jelly sieve their grandmother used when she canned.  After the war and the move back to Oregon the sisters traveled by train back to Los Angles to visit their grandparents.  For some reason they always visited in August and the pomegranates were always ripe.  One of Diane's neighbors has a pomegranate tree in their front yard and every year she helps herself to just one.  She feels like a seven year old again!

Ladies lunching out 08-23-17

My friend Carol has been talking about this restaurant since she went with friends a month or so ago.  So we matched up dates with our friend Teresa and gave it a try yesterday.  It is Farmhouse at Roger's Gardens in Corona del Mar.  I used to shop for plants at Roger's Gardens, an upscale nursery with fabulous plants and imaginative hanging baskets and multi-plant pots.  They also have patio furniture, a top rated gift shop, and just about anything a gardener would be seeking.  It isn't for penny-pinchers as it is located in the very elite area of Corona del Mar, almost adjacent to the VERY upscale Fashion Island.  Years ago, when I lived in Huntington Beach I did a lot of gardening and would frequent Rogers for unusual plants and unique planting ideas.  I will post some pictures later that I took yesterday of the flowers on display.

I thought I had taken pictures of our lunch plates but all I took was dessert.  Of course!  I had wonderful Icelandic cod with baby broccoli and farro and a lovely mild sauce.  Carol had the Grilled Hanger Steak with Heirloom Tomato Salad, and Teresa had a Gorgonzola & Granny Smith Apple & Chicken  Salad (w/candied pecans, dried cranberries, mixed lettuce and raspberry vinaigrette). Everything was delicious and beautifully presented.  Of course, we couldn't resist dessert.

Flourless Chocolate Cake w/fruit, red wine sauce and whipped cream.

Peach Crisp w/brown sugar and oat topping, vanilla bean ice cream and caramel sauce.

It was a lovely day.

Terry Grant Quilt from TCQC 08-20-17

This is one of the few pieces in TCQC that is, in a sense, framed.  It is mounted on a heavy nubby weave beige fabric on stretcher bars.  There is heavy card over the hole formed by the stretcher bars.  The quilt itself is not bound, so the batting shows as a white edge.

There are about a dozen pieces of Terry's work in TCQC.  I do admire what she creates.  This piece hangs in my master bath so that I can enjoy it every day.

"Yellow Bowl"  Terry Grant - Beaverton, OR  2014  10" x 10"
Recycled cotton fabrics, fusible, cotton thread, cotton batting.
  Machine appliqued and quilted.

Terry has used her distinctive black "sketching" to machine outline the bowl

This shows some of the shirting fabrics that Terry dyes and uses in her quilts.  Some of them come from the Talbot outlet in Carmel Valley, CA.  Others are from resale shops in the form of shirts and blouses.
