Last four quilts from Beach Cities QGuild QShow 06-19-14

I may try to retrieve some of Liz' pictures, she likes different quilts than I.  But I don't really know how to access her pictures and will have to "play around" with them.  When I have a bit of time, I'll give it a try. 

 

Here is another modern quilt by Nancy Gasparotti.   I love the diamonds, but haven't yet been able to adjust to all grey backgrounds.  They look a little dirty to me - I'll get over it!

 

This quilt is more effective in-the-fabric, the squiggly lines on the straight lines really made my eyes strain to see the design.  The flowers remind me of some I made lately, but I think these are more effective than mine. 

Interesting design done with impeccable technique.  But I don't think the quilting works well.

The outlines, beaks and legs are done with a precise satin stitch. 

I think this guy has a club foot - and just one! 

I know, I can't read it either, but I wanted to at least have the artist's name and the quilt title shown.  She says that she used "Backyard Birds" pattern by Piece O' Cake, but changed the colors and something on the birds.  A lovely little quilt.

Beach Cities QGuild Quilt Show 06-13-14

One of the local quilt guilds held their biennial quilt show last weekend and Liz and I went to see what there was to see.  The quilt has a reputation for showing exceptional work by members; they have more than a few members who like to work with wool applique, several that specialize in embroidered quilts, and some who do original art quilts.  I'll show more work as I have time and space in my blog.

 

 

This is a fantastic use of this fabric, which I had admired in the shops, but couldn't think of what I might do with it.  Jane's quilt is a knock out.

I think it is very effective to have the circles randomly quilted rather than each one sewn exactly on the edge of the dots.  The background is stippled.

Instead of ribbons they give flowers!

 

I have seen this machine embroidery being done automatically on an embroidery machine, but this is the first quilt I have seen done like this.  It is done with gold colored thread - not metallic.

I have a bunny lover amongst my friends, so I took a detail that might please her.  It almost looks as though this bunny has wings.  In this picture you can see the block seams.  

 

The one terrible thing about the show was the pictures of the quiltmakers.  Apparently whoever did the photos didn't realize they needed to resize them from the corners rather than top/bottom and side/side.  Makes everyone look misshapen and about 50 pounds heavier.

Nancy Gasparotti makes great original quilts with a modern quilt movement color selection, although she was doing this before the formation of the Modern Quilt Guild.  The darker triangle on the right side of the quilt is a shadow cast by the lighting system.  Nancy has a great eye for color.   One of her pieces is in the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.

A Day with the Prince 04-19-12

I hadn't been with Corky since March 16th - toooo long.  I have really missed him while I was traveling and laying in bed trying to get over the cold I picked up at Empty Spools/Asilomar.  Yesterday I picked him up about 8:15am and delivered him to the groomer for his haircut.  Grooming is very tiring for him now that he is almost 16 (July 29th), so when we were back at his house he settled down for a nap and pretty much slept until his parents came home about 4pm.   I took a bunch of photos, but can't decide which is the best.  So, here are a bunch.  Isn't he wonderful?  Just look at those dear little feet.  Yes, I am besotted!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The quilt is by Nancy Gasparotti.  I purchased it at the Surfside QGuild auction last fall and took it with me to Corky's so that I could have a nap.  He decided he liked it and sort of took it over.  He does that!

Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest '11 11-08-11

The big day finally arrived with sunshine and lots of enthusiastic members and guests.  It was a happy, festive event and the guild will have a chunk of money to add to the bank account.   The eighteen live auction quilts were eagerly sought by determined bidders, egged on by our excellent auctioneer, Lyn Mann, a local and regional teacher/lecturer/designer.  She was great. 

 
Here I am with Nancy Ota who made this beautiful quilt with Ellen Heck, who is a well known, prize winning applique artist.  Personally, I think Nancy is every bit as talented and I am happy to say that I was the high bidder and brought this exquisite piece home with me.  It is already up on the wall where I can enjoy it every day.  I will write more about it at a later time.

I also brought home another auction quilt make by Nancy Gasparotti in the style of Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston.  It is so bright and wild it will cheer up anyone who sees it.  I'll save it for a later post.

Look back at the Beach Cities QGuild QShow 06-22-10

There are at least two members of Beach Cities Quilters Guild who like to work with large, bright prints. Too bad they can't visit Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove on a regular basis - they carry the best selection I have ever seen. I buy great fabrics when I am up there, but, unfortunately, I never seem to DO anything with them. These ladies used theirs with aplomb. These were shown at the quilt show on June 5 & 6, 2010.

Hard to get back far enough to capture this entire quilt. The name "Heatwave" seems perfect for this bright, hot quilt.

The quilt below actually hurt my eyes to look at it "in-the-fabric" and even the picture gives them a jiggly feeling! But this is a WOW of a quilt, beautifully done and beautifully quilted.
