Looking back 06-10-17

I am one of those people who likes to look back to see what was happening on any given day in the past.  I don't record something every single day, but the advent of computers and digital cameras has given me a photo record on Picasa that stretches back to a few pictures from 2005 and some very old shots that have been scanned in at different times.  I have boxes of photos and slides going back from before I was born, but not the energy or inclination to go through them and scan them into the digital files.    Maybe some day in the future I will find time and interest.

This is a week with several special memories.  Fifty-five years ago on June 9, 1962, I married my first husband with all the wonderful future stretching out before us.  We were divorced in 1971.  Such mixed memories of those nine years.  In 1991 I took my first class from Ruth McDowell (whose birthday is June 8th), one of many over the years.  A great teacher, a lovely friend, and a large part of the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.   On June 6, 1997 I started being "nanny" to Corky, the Poodle Prince.  He had a great influence on my life and took me on many adventures I wouldn't have had without him.  He wasn't quite a year old and rather a handful at first.  He died in November 2013, leaving me bereft of a lover in my life.   A job taken in August 2016 by KoKo.

Here I am with my sister, Ellamarie, taken in Portland, OR, sometime in 1941, I think.  Do I look like I am three-something and Ellamarie is six-something?   I had bangs and pigtails because my hair is as straight as hair can be.  Ellamarie has flowing locks because she inherited the natural curly hair gene.

Thursday Threads - "Morning Sniff" 06-08-17

Every month Surfside Quilters Guild (and many other guilds) have a raffle for some project donated by one of the members.  SQG calls their fund raiser Monthly Mini.  Every year I donate something as part of my commitment to the guild.  The items can bring in from $100 to $300, so it is a good contribution.

"Morning Sniff"  Del Thomas 2010  Approx. 12"W x 17"L
Cotton fabric and thread.  Fused.  Machine quilted.

I had this bird fabric for years, but never knew what to do with it.  Perfect as a backing and it fills in as the bird image I put in every quilt I make.

This is what happens when you apply the label before doing the quilting. Makes it hard to read the date of March 2010.

Fund Raising for Visions Art Museum - San Diego 06-06-17

Visions Art Museum will be exhibiting quilts by 36 artists in the fall for Interpretations: Conversations opening October 21, 2017. The quilts were selected by jurors Pamela Allen, Eszter Bornemisza, and Rosalie Dace from 223 entries for this international, juried exhibition. A full-color catalog is planned with images of each quilt.  Del Thomas has pledged to match donations up to $5000 to support the museum toward the design and printing costs of the catalog, and with national advertising for the exhibition. Please add your donation to hers with a contribution in any amount. Your gift will help to create a beautiful publication that will celebrate these artists and the exhibition for years to come. You can make your donation on the Visions Art Museum website here, http://www.visionsartmuseum.org/donate/. All donations in the month of June will support the Interpretations: Conversations  catalog and advertising. .

Threads of Resistance gallery 06-05-17

I'm re-posting this item because it seems so timely.  Take some time to pour over these expressions of our political status.  There were over 500 quilts submitted for this exhibit.

Cairo Tentmakers applique 06-04-17

"Cairo Tentmaker Panel"  Hossam Farouk 2008 46" x45"
Hand applique.  Cotton fabric and thread.

There are three layers - top w/applique, a heavy canvas and a solid fabric backing - but they are not quilted together. The applique stitches go through the applique, the background and pick up just a tiny thread in the canvas. The dark blue backing is attached only at the edges.

This detail shows the workmanship which is amazing, but not perfect enough for a quilt show judge! Considering all this handwork the panels are incredibly inexpensive. I chose this one because of the three that Jenny Bowker had with her in the class I took with her, it has the greatest range of colors.
