Home again 10-10-15

I am home from Palm Springs, but have no energy left to do pictures.  Tomorrow!  It was hotter here in Orange County than it was in Palm Springs!  Fullerton, right next door, had a high today of 103F.  Not sure what it was here.  102F sometime while I was gone.

Thank you to those who read my blog for coming to the Visions table to say hello.  I'm always happy to meet my invisible friends.

A few quilts at the Mancuso Oasis show in Palm Springs 10-08-15

All of the quilts we were expecting to see are not here - they seem to have become delayed in transit.  We are hoping they will arrive before this show is over.

We all think it is pretty strange that these quilts do not show the makers names.  We think it is because they will not be judged until PIQF starts in a week.  But there was no restriction on taking pictures so we did.  I still don't understand the distinction between art quilts and modern quilts, but I couldn't help but notice how densely these quilts are quilted.  Perhaps that is part of the difference.

I can tell you that this first one "Confined" was made by Nancy Ota of San Clemente, CA.

This quilt was made by Sylvia Schaefer of Athens, Georgia and won a first place ribbon at PIQF 2015.

At the Oasis Quilt Show in Palm Springs 10-07-15

I am in Palm Springs tonight and the Mancuso Oasis Festival opens tomorrow.  I am helping to woman the Visions Art Museum table - passing out brochures and talking to people about Visions.  I am excited to see the "World Show" which I used to enjoy so much when I went to Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara.  I haven't  been for several years, so seeing all the wonderful quilts will be an exciting thing.  My friend Nancy Ota has a quilt in this show.  And, of course, there are hundreds of vendors.  I am not on the schedule for tomorrow so I will see the quilts and visit the vendors.  Pictures tomorrow night.

Camera Tossing 10-06-15

Have you ever tried camera tossing?  Check it out on Google.  I have tried it several times and find that night time is a colorful time to do it.  You must, of course, hang on tightly to the strap on your camera or you will have a broken camera.  These were all taken with a little Nikon pocket camera in 2009.   These might not be "officially" camera tossed because I held onto the strap - I'm not any good at playing catch, especially with a "loose" camera.

I frequently got "stitches" from some of the lights.

I just did it to see what happened, I haven't done anything with the images.  But I find them intriguing.   Here is a page of camera tossing pictures:

Karen Eckmeier does commissioned church hangings which are quite beautiful:

Do check Pinterest for pictures of quilts by your favorite teacher/lecturers.  Just type their name in the search box.  Some great work out there.

Revisiting TCQC quilts 10-04-15

I think I will revisit some of the quilts I have posted in the past.  This quilt with parrots was a SAQA Auction quilt in 2010.  The SAQA online auction is going on now.  Check it out at: http://www.saqa.com/auction-quiltviewALL.php
I've added a number of bird quilts to the Collection since 2010, enough to have an exhibit of just birds, including Diane  Wright's crow from section two of this year's auction.

 Parrots in TCQC 12-12-10
Here is another purchase from the SAQA online 2010 auction. It caught my eye immediately - the images are so crisp and the color is perfectly 'parrot-y'. Sherry likes to watch the large flock of parrots that live in her area, as I like to watch those that live in the city of Orange.
"Treetop Parrots of the Palisades" Sherry Kleinman 2010 12" x 12"
Painted, machine pieced, machine quilted.
Sherry says about her piece: "Treetop Parrots of the Palisades" was inspired by the many free flying parrots (former pets) flying around my neighborhood here in Pacific Palisades. My piece is painted with water-soluble media (crayons and pencils) on raw canvas and then machine stitched."
The tiny red buttons add texture and color.

But I'm not so sure about the lady bug and bee buttons. I find them distracting.
Sherry has done dense quilting over the entire design and the piece is very flat.

The backing fabric appears to be a hand dye, but it might be a batik - I can't tell for sure.
This is a great addition to the Collection. I am a bird lover and have made a number of bird quilts in the past. However, I haven't found a lot of bird quilts to add to the Collection, I hope this is the first of many.
