Last SQG Newsletter done 04-24-18

I have done my last newsletter for Surfside Quilters Guild and sent it to be proof read.  I am already missing it!  Nothing on my May calendar for the creation or publishing of the newsletter - looks rather blank!   But I am hoping to go on a road trip to visit friends in the Pacific Northwest - Washington and Oregon.  So, that will fill up that space.  

This weekend I will drive up to Pacific Grove to pick up the Bird quilts that have been hanging at Back Porch Fabrics.  KoKo will stay with Dee Jacobs where he is always happy.  My sincere and deepest appreciation to Dee!

Not much to blog about 04-16-18

I am working on my very last newsletter for the Surfside Quilters Guild.  I have been doing it for about nine years and it is time for me to retire.  We have a volunteer to take over and I think she is very conscientious and organized, so she should do well.  We will meet after the board meeting to exchange information and paperwork.  Although, since it is an online newsletter there isn't much paper to exchange.  The archives are on the guild website, so there isn't a box of back copies to pass on.   I know I will miss doing it, but I would like to get back to making quilts and taking trips without the additional job of working on the newsletter as I travel.   And I need to get this newsletter posted before I drive up to Pacific Grove to pick up the quilts from the "Birds" exhibit, which comes down on April 30th.  

I won't be seeing any almond trees in bloom.  This image was from March 2005.

The end of the month is Surfside Newsletter work 11-28-17

Surfside Quilters Guild held their annual November Fest on Nov 14th and it was quite successful.  We made about what we did last year - $15,000.  It helps us have very good speakers and lets us all have a chance to work together and make new friends in the guild. 

 

I am working on the newsletter for December and want to share the quilt that had the highest bid in the quilt auction.  It was made by a friendship group and donated to the auction.  I bid on it until it got to $400 and had to drop out.  I don't even do Christmas, but I fell in love with this quilt.  The actual color is a bit brighter, but the yellowish lights in the meeting room are hard to filter out.  This is the best I could do.  Isn't it cute?   Notice that some of the figures are snowwomen - you can tell because they are wearing heels and one is carrying a pink purse.  And then there is a snowpuppy at the bottom.  I'll put a picture in my "maybe, someday" file and perhaps make my own one day.

No browsing this week. 09-04-17

I have been working on the Surfside Quilters Guild newsletter this past week and haven't had time to do much browsing.  It is another 20 pager with the thirty-three challenge quilts pictured.  I wish I could have put in the stories with each quilt, but that would have been at least a 30 page newsletter - more than I care to do or most members care to read!  The quilts are worth a look - 33 quilters started with the same theme and the same three fabrics and every quilt is individual and unlike any other.  It always amazes me.

The weather has moderated and the high today was only 87F, down from 108F on Friday.  Whew!

Not much happening this week 04-21-16

Keeping up with KoKo, the Yorkie, and working on the Surfside Quilters Guild newsletter is about  all I can manage.  It is a big job for May because we have a change of officers, so all the officers pictures and contact info must be updated.  I do enjoy doing the newsletter, some months more than others, because the completed issue is so satisfying in a life filled with UFOs. 

 

Meanwhile I am dreaming of a road trip this summer.  Hopefully without tornadoes! 

 But I will see:

Cliffs and Rock Formations

Clouds that look like letters of the alphabet.

 

Road construction and rain up ahead.

All kinds of cows.

Thousands of big rigs.

And a lot of flat countryside - with and without crops.

I do love a Road Trip.

Too tired tonight 03-14-16

Sorry - no pictures tonight.  I have been taking naps off and on all day and am still so sleepy I may go to sleep with my hands on the keyboard.  I have pictures of all the final class projects and will edit and resize them tomorrow so I can post them.  Board Meeting in the morning and then I will have all afternoon to work on the pictures and the SQG newsletter.

Newsletter for Surfside Quilters Guild 10-03-15

I have done newsletters for groups I belong to for quite a few years.  Sometimes I even miss the smell of glue and wax and the clutter of the old fashioned "cut and paste".  Doing a newsletter on the computer is completely different.  Pictures are easy and moving things around takes paying attention, but makes things go quickly.  The Surfside QGuild newsletter runs about twenty pages each month  because of the pictures.  Here are the URLs for September, which has pictures of all forty Challenge quilts, and October, which has ten of the live auction quilts for the November Fest coming up.

The day the newsletter is posted online I start the next month, so now I am working on November.  My eyes give out on me if I spend too much uninterrupted time on line, so it is better to spread the work out.

Another newsletter completed 10-07-14

My job as newsletter editor for the Surfside Quilt Guild rolls around once a month.  It takes me longer to do it now, because my eyes bother me when I work too long.  Which means I have to start earlier in the month.  I didn't do that for the October newsletter and posted it very late.  I'll try to do better in November.  Especially because it is November Fest time and we need people to come to our meeting and enjoy brunch, raffle baskets and a live auction.

More Fiber Postcards 02-26-11

When I have a little time I am still working on the fiber postcards that I owe everyone.  You know who you are!  Since I just put the Surfside QGuild newsletter 'to bed', I relaxed a bit and did some cutting and fusing.

Regardless of coloration, this cat is always Mona - she is very serene.

 

I might give this bird a branch to sit on.

 

And maybe this one will have long legs so his tail won't drag on the ground.

Surfside Quilters Guild newsletter 07-04-10

I am doing another year as the newsletter editor for our new daytime guild, Surfside Quilters Guild which meets in San Clemente, CA, (about 45 -60 minutes south of where I live). I decided that since I have spent so much time over the past year learning how to use Publisher and how to do a newsletter online, it would be a good use of all those smarts to continue. Clip Art 04-30-10

For several days I have been experimenting to find a way to move something from Publisher to Blogger and this is what I have been able to do. They aren't perfect - but they are here and I hope they don't just disappear. When I create the Surfside QGuild newsletter I am always looking for appropriate clips to use in those odd blank spaces, but I don't want to have to pay for them! The free clip art sites seemed to be arranged in strange ways. Below are a few of the images that are offered in the category "Spring".

Some I could figure out. Here is a guy exercising with equipment composted of coil springs. And maybe the school bus is Spring Break? I had to think a bit about the green onions - they are referred to as spring onions in some parts of the country.

I haven't a clue what this has to do with Spring. It appears to be someone tying together large bones in a cave. Spring bones? Nah.

The image on the left has lovely spring colors, but what does it mean? Is there a country that celebrates Spring with a lady on a stick whose hair resembles fire? And finally there is Spring with a flower - a snowdrop maybe? I was able to locate some images I could use. You can check them out in the Surfside QGuild newsletter post May 1, 2010.

Newsletter is finished and posted. 10-01-09

Not much to say tonight. I am so tired I keep going to sleep and almost falling off my chair! Corky and I did a lot of napping today - I reading a bit now and then and Corky dreaming of something exciting. There was so much to put in the N/L that I had to add two new pages - the count is now 17. That is 'fat' enough, don't you think? You can find it at:

It has taken me almost 50 minutes to type this little bit, due to my drifting off to sleep. Even after all those naps - I am, I guess, seriously tired.

A fabulous 'read' is "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" by the late Stieg Larsson. I am going to have to buy the sequel "Girl Who Played with Fire", even if it is a 'nose breaker' [hardcover books can be dangerous when reading in bed]. It is really tragic that he died so young and we won't be able to read any subsequent books he might have written.

I have some wonderful pictures taken by Carol Whiteside, but my eyes are too weary to do the editing - I've been doing a few at a time.

Now that Terry Grant has taught me to put videos on my blog I will enlessly beseige you with them! This one is fascinating and over 8 minutes long, but I have a funny one waiting in the wings for next week.

How do we discover where our talent lies unless we try many different things? Surely nobody arises one morning and says I'm going to learn to paint with sand on glass. How would she discover this tool-less talent?

Sorry, no quilt tonight. 08-02-09

I am working on the Surfside QGuild newsletter, which should have gone out on Friday night! So, I am at least two days late. I feel like it is a great hot and heavy three-way wrestling match between the computer, Microsoft Publisher and my ageing brain. I will never be able to thank Jeanne Mills enough for all the long distance computer/telephone help she has given me with Publisher - she is an angel. I hope to get up there at the end of the month, just for a visit, and Jeanne says she will give me a lesson! What more could I ask for? Tonight my eyes are so tired and sore I have to go to bed, at least for a few hours, before I can face the newsletter again.

Corky is doing great - he thinks he is a puppy again! I'll take him to the acupuncturist on Wednesday and see what Dr. Woods has to say. It is VERY difficult to keep the PPrince confined. His parents are tired from being on edge about it. I'll be in LBeach from Tuesday night until Saturday whilst they go to the desert.

Once the N/L is done I will post some more QFestival Quilts. I'm surprised I didn't get more feedback about the owl quilt - I wish you could all see it "in-the-fabric".
