KoKo at Camp Del 05-28-16

KoKo has been with me since last Sunday and I think I will keep him for another week.  He had a bath today, which he tolerates well, but when he gets tired of it he is all legs.  Guess I learned that it has to be a speedy bath.

Side trip to Point Loma 05-26-16

When Nancy and I went to San Diego to see the presentation on Japanese Textiles last Sunday, we arrived a bit early so we drove out to Point Loma because we had never been there.  There is an extensive military cemetery on the way out to the Cabrillo Monument and beyond is the harbor and the towers of downtown San Diego.  When we got to the gate for the Point we were about 20 cars back and the line was not moving.  We had to turn around and head back to Liberty Station (where Visions Art Museum is located) or we would be late for the program.  We stopped for a few minutes along the way to take pictures.  My were terrible so all these were taken by Nancy with her phone.  It's worth the drive just for the view.  Next time I'll go during the week and maybe there won't be so much traffic.

No Browsing Monday 05-23-16

I haven't been browsing online much the past few weeks.  I've had little KoKo as a houseguest and am working on the Surfside Quilters Guild newsletter.  I went with Nancy Ota to Visions Art Museum in San Diego on Saturday to hear a lecture on Japanese Textiles by Susan Lazear, Professor of Fashion, Mesa College, San Diego, CA.  If you ever have the chance to hear her, don't miss it.  She had excellent slides in a Power Point program and many samples of different textiles and techniques.  We ended our visit with lunch at Ikiru sushi restaurant, still my very favorite sushi spot.  Try the crab roll which is served warm.

Maybe I will find some time to browse in the coming week.

Does anyone know what this plant is?

Terry Grant quilt added to TCQC 05-22-16

When I first saw a picture of this quilt I wrote to Terry and asked to buy it when it came back from touring in a group show.  She kindly e-mailed me recently saying the quilt was available and I put a check in the mail.  I like the piece even more now that I have seen it in-the-fabric.  The photos are not good, showing the quilt much more blue than it is.  It is darker, like the night is in the desert.  I photographed it twice, but had the same result.  Sorry, Terry.  Check out Terry's blog post for May 5th to see a better image.

"Desert Nights"    Terry Grant, Beaverton, OR  2014 24"W x 60"L
Cotton fabric, paint.  Machine pieced, appliqued, quilted.

Terry's hand-dyed stripes and plaids are one of her signature marks

These white disc shaped beads are fastened down with a black seed bead in the middle.  White sead beads are scattered among them.

The other white dots are white paint creating a sky full of stars.

Tidy label with basic info.  The HFDBlue is from the group show created by High Fiber Diet.

You can see on the back that this quilt is composed of five panels, each finished on the edges and then assembled into the whole quilt.

This is the backing fabric showing the vertical quilting (once called channel quilting, but I have seen many new names for it recently).
