Quilts from Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection 11-05-23

Two pieces by Kathleen Probst, purchased two years apart. The first is a12x12 from the 2012 SAQA online auction.

"Simple Landform: Sand & Water" - Kathleen Probst - Idaho 2011  12"X12"

Fused, hand-stitched and machine stitched.

Kathleen  notes: "The balance between sand and water interests me, as they mutually agree on boundaries. Montessori landform puzzles were the inspiration for this piece. This is the first time I've hand-stitched one of my "Simple Series" pieces to create the chunky lines I've been craving." 

DEL COMMENTS: I am intrigued by the shapes and the stitching on this piece - besides, it is blue and yellow!

This one I purchased directly from Kathleen.

From TCQC 08-30-20

For the SAQA "challenge" of posting quilts in an alphabetical order I posted 26 quilts, but it wasn't a representative selection from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  Because I am having continuing problems with access to my photo files I had to post what I could find that started with a certain letter.  Frustration to the umpth degree.  So, I will try to go back to my previous practice of posting a quilt from the Collection on Sundays.  In no particular order and as I can access my files.  I might have to do some photography if I can't have access.

On the road again 02-18-20

I'll be going up to Pacific Grove to hang selections from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection at Back Porch Fabrics.  There is no theme to this exhibit, just selections from the Collection.  If you are attending Empty Spools I hope you will get a chance to visit Back Porch and view the quilts.  They will hang until April 30th.

Friday Feet 06-30-17

I don't usually identify the feet that I post.  But this post is directly attributed to Kathleen Probst who posted her images on Facebook.  They made me laugh.   Del

 

This is Kathleen's explanation:  

Sometimes you just have to laugh. This afternoon I was dyeing fabric with my table top washer, in my laundry room. I did not climb up on my stool to look at the dials, like I usually do. There are only two dials. I accidentally turned the dial to drain the machine, instead of the one to agitate. Imagine my surprise when hot teal water gushed out of the drain hose, not aimed into a bucket because I was just starting the process, not finishing up. Our white laundry room was soaked and spattered in dark teal. I did not take a picture of the mess, I rushed to clean it up. I thought you might enjoy this evidence of the crime scene.😳😳

Yvonne Porcella Exhibit at Visions Art Museum 01-26-16

 I drove to San Diego for the opening of Visions Art Museum's latest exhibit.  In the main gallery is a wonderful display of Yvonne Porcella's quilts from over 50 years of being an artist and in the small gallery are the quilts of Kathleen Probst who is fairly new to the world of art quilts and is going strong.

Kathleen Probst quilt in TCQC

I drove down to San Diego yesterday for the opening of "Interpretations" the newest exhibit at Visions Art Museum.  There were 14 of the 31 artists at the opening - always fascinating to hear them talk about their work.  One of them was Kathleen Probst of Idaho who flew down for the weekend.  I had the pleasure of her company at dinner and again at lunch today.  What she does is very modern, although she doesn't consider herself a "modern" quilt artist - just an artist.  This is one of her pieces in TCQC which I added several years ago.

"Interpretations" exhibit opening at Visions Art Museum 10-17-15

I am in San Diego at HIE again!   I drove down (2 1/2 hours)  for the opening reception for the "Interpretations" exhibit which opened  today.  This is an International juried exhibit with 32 quilts selected by an international jury - Noriko Endo of Japan, Dena Dale Crain of Africa and Alicia Merrett of UK.  They made wonderful selections and the Visions installation crew did a great job hanging the quilts to enhance our viewing pleasure.  The exhibit runs through January 3, 2016, and I hope you can all get to San Diego to see it "in the fabric".  There is a beautiful catalog available for $3 plus postage.  Check with the Visions staff.

After the reception I was fortunate to go out to Ikiru for a late dinner with Linda Colsh and Kathleen Probst.  We all had something different that has been pictured in this blog previously. Except Linda's selection of California Roll - it has never looked so good!  And  it was delicious.

 

Linda Colsh is giving a presentation tomorrow morning and I will attend that before heading home.  Perhaps lunch first ... at Ikiru?

 

The exhibits missing from Palm Springs were also missing at PIQF.  I understand the shipper was UPS!   Hope they locate the palette/shipping container soon.  Everyone would rather have their quilt than insurance money.
