Busy Day 01-12-16

Today was the Surfside Quilters Guild meeting with speaker Sherry Werum.  She does several different programs and our VP/Programs had chosen Mosaic Quilts.  She is an excellent speaker and showed about 30 quilts from 12" to a gorgeous King size.  Her husband, Mark, accompanies her as holder/folder and does a little ditty on his homemade mandolin (which is gorgeous and very professionally  finished).   The quilts are all based on ancient mosaics  in Greece, Italy, Israel, and points in between.  Her point is that many of the American quilt patterns could be copies of these ancient mosaics - Baby's Blocks, Attic Windows, Dresden Plate, Trip Around the World, Cathedral Window, etc..  All very interesting and her quilts are beautifully done.  Consider her for a program at your home guild.

The sun was shining and the temp did get up to 70F, but it still seems cold to me!  Only a few Show and Tell quilts - guess everyone outdid themselves for Christmas.

Another auction quilt new to TCQC 01-10-16

The Alliance for American Quilts held a competition titled "Animals We Love"  and auctioned the quilts online last month.  This quilt won the competition and I won the bid for it.

"Giraffe Nocturne"  Nancy S. Brown - Oakland, CA 2015  15.5"W x 15"L
Nancy does exquisite hand applique and specializes in images of animals.  She made this statement about her quilt: "I love giraffes and based this quilt on a giraffe that lives at the Oakland Zoo.  Giraffes only sleep about two hours a day - usually for about five minutes at a time - so they are awake most of the night.  I thought this one might enjoy the cool evening  air and the light of a full moon.

What great detail she has in the eyes.

Those funny nostrils that giraffes have.

Nice label with contact information.

The back has a matching 4 inch sleeve.
