Not much to post tonight as I have been working on the Surfside newsletter. So, here is website about an really amazing woman. I have introduced her before and this is a continuation of her story. People think I am unusual in that I will drive just about anywhere by myself, but, I gotta tell ya', I don't carry a gun - just pepper spray. This lady is gutsier than I am.

Rayna's Ancient Block Challenge 04-22-10
About a month ago Rayna Gillman was rediscovering some UFOs that she had stashed away a very long time ago. This block came from a quilt top of equally appalling blocks and she wondered about cutting them all up and creating something new and freewheeling. Asking for volunteers she was able to pawn off the blocks on online friends - including me. I've done a step-by-step of what I have done and will post each step.
The challenged must have their 'results' done by April 27th so they can send a jpg to Rayna and she is planning on posting them all.
I did not photograph the original block she sent to me, but immediately ripped out all the seams, pressed the nine components, fused them to Wonder-Under and squared them up to 5.25". Pinning them to a portable board in their original layout I took this picture and commenced to move, cut, rearrange, etc.. I have hauled them around the house so I could look at them, no matter where I was or what I was doing. To me, this is a logical method of working.
Today I had a major molar removed because it had cracked vertically and there was no saving it. Although it took longer to pull it out than I had expected, it is not painful at all. I have followed the instructions to ice it for 20 minutes out of every 30 for 8 hours and have taken Tylenol every 5 hours. I have also rested in bed with my head elevated on two pillows and taken the antibiotic prescribed. All the while contemplating my 'challenge block' - when I wasn't snoozing or reading. I can see that the direction I was going is not very inventive, so tomorrow I will give it some more thought. It is easier to do this without having to actually sew it together - just move the pieces around until I like the way it looks and then hit them with the iron. I've tried about six different background fabrics, but haven't found the right one yet. I am also working on the Surfside QG N/L to be posted on Tuesday. Busy gal.

More birds? 04-19-10
These Lesser Goldfinches were photographed by my friend Liz Williams at her window view feeder in La Habra. Can you see the one in flight in the left center of the picture? I have seen more Goldfinches and House Finches this year than for a very long time. It could be that I am out and about more, but I think that since we have had so much rain (more than twice as much as last year) there is more natural food for the birds in our area and, therefore, more birds..
And we are still having rain! I came home from the Surfside QGuild meeting in Dana Point about 2pm and the sky was crowded with baggy grey clouds - it was about 72F and quite windy. I took a nap, then worked at the computer a bit and when next I looked out around 5:30pm it was raining and only 51F. Since the installation of the 'heavy duty' windows the house stays a more even temperature all the time, so I didn't notice the drop until I went out in the garage for something. Boy, I sure kick myself all the time for not having the garage insulated with the rest of the house. It wouldn't matter so much, but the washer/dryer are in the garage. In the summer it is suffocating to do the laundry and in the winter I have to put a coat on. We live and learn.

One-foot square quilt from TCQC - Chris Hansen 04-18-10
"Looking Into the Future" Chris Hansen 2009 12" x 12 "
This quilt is from the 2009 SAQA auction, one of seven that I purchased for the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection. I was intrigued by the layered fine net and the machine drawn features on this lady. I also seem to be attracted by the use of flowers or foliage for hair.
Her eyes are so worried and, like everyone I know, one eye is slightly smaller than the other. Chris lives in Nevada - http://www.soulfoodart.com/index.htm
