A tired day 10-26-23

Still suffering from extreme tiredness and the only appointment with a cardiologist is December  11!    This is with a  large cardiology group nearby. My primary doesn't  feel it is urgent, but I am somewhat concerned.  I don't really think there is a problem, but I would like to have more energy.    Maybe it is just my age. We are still walking twice a day and I have a nap almost every day.  Keep on keeping on.

Surfside Quilters Guild is all  geared  up for our November 14th meeting which is November Fest, our  primary fund raiser.   There is a wonderful selection of quilts for the live auction, interesting things for the silent auction,  anamazing boutique,  and an abundance of Raffle Baskets.  I prepared a thread basket again this year with donations from friends and guild members.   During the year I collect items from "going out of quilting" people and miscellaneous sales. This year there are +/- 200 spools, some partially used, but mostly unopened spools. Lots of  poly and rayon and metallic.

This complex, colorful quilt made Cathie Opila is one of the spectacular offerings in   the live auction.

Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest 11-13-18

Another successful November Fest.  These special meetings are generally a lot of fun and raise enough money for the monthly programs that we can enjoy great speakers.  I always contribute by buying quilts at the live quilt auction.  The auctioneer, Lyn Mann is adept at squeezing out just a few more dollars for each quilt.   I had the winning bids for three of the quilts.  The quilt I really wanted came home with me and will hang in the home of a friend for this Christmas season.

"Christmas Wreath"  Maggie Bell and Jennifer Bell  51" square.

Nice quilting by Cathie Opila.

Always hard to take pictures in this great meeting room.  The windows along the entire side back light everyone and fade things out.  In front are Julie Vlahos and Liz Williams. Next row back: Joan Provance, Kay Johnstone, and Mary Mulcahey.

Walking on the right is Jeanne Haynes.

Fun meeting and Liz,  who came as my guest, won a raffle basket.

Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest 11-08-16

Today was our major fundraiser for the guild, so that we have outstanding speakers and great workshops.

A treasure of our guild is the music before the meeting starts and during break.  We have three pianists who trade off playing.  Above is Pat McNeil.  Also Sharing their talent are Jo Hutcheson and Elizabeth Geer.  We appreciate their selections and their dedication.

Our event includes raffle baskets which were large and fascinating this year.  I did my thread basket which contained about 300 spools of thread - some "pre-owned",  but most of them new.  I collect them throughout the year from friends who clean out their studios and from estate sales.

One friendship group does a money tree or bouquet each year.  Trouble is nobody wants to unfold the money to spend it!

We have a live auction with quilts donated by individuals, friendship groups and the Philanthropy group.  The two on the right are vintage tops, we always have a few.

Of course, there is food.  Delicious treats, both sweet and savory made by members.  We always think, "What will we do with all this food?"  only to find the tables bare by the end of the event.

It was a fun day and, hopefully, we have enhanced our coffers for the year ahead.

Still having computer problems

This is getting frustrating and boring!  The AT&T tech was here today to give me a new modem.  Things went well for a couple hours and then I couldn't get online.  I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if there is anything else they can do.  Meanwhile I probably won't be posting again.

Tomorrow is the Surfside Quilters Guild November Fest, our main fund raiser for the year.   If you attend please say hello to the lady in the hat with the camera - that'll be me!  Del

Nancy Ota quilt in TCQC 11-07-10

Last year the Surfside Quilters Guild held their first fund raiser "December Fest", a live auction, silent auction and basket raffle. It was very successful, but it was difficult to have the event between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, this year we are having "November Fest" which will take place on Tuesday, November 9th. There are 17 items on the live auction and 67 raffle baskets - we dropped the silent auction which was the least effective event. You can check everything out on the front page of our website: http://www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/
Last year the quilt below was one of the live auction items and I bid hard for it. I have long admired Nancy Ota's sewing ability, not just as a quiltmaker, but as an embroiderer, applique artist, and... well, just about everything she does. Some years ago I won a little angel quilt she made and donated to Beach Cities Quilters Guild, so "Sea Leaves" is the second Ota quilt in TCQC.

"Sea Leaves" Nancy Ota 2007 21.5"W x 21"L

Cotton batiks, hand dyed cotton, commercial cotton. Machine pieced, appliqued, quilted.

Started in a workshop with Lorraine Torrence.

Nancy is an expert seamstress - look at the smooth edge stitching on the bias strips. And notice the tiny seagull slipped in between the leaves.

And look at her control with stitching her signature.

Whatever batting she used certainly makes the quilting stitches stand out.
Nancy has a pattern company and sells her original bag patterns. She also teaches classes in sashiko and in the construction of her unique bags. http://www.nancyota.com/
