Friday Facilities 01-24-14

Although I have seen it year after year, I always have a giggle when I see the urinals at the Ontario Convention Center.  I don't know if they started this practice or if Road to CA did.  Most of the men's rooms are converted to women's rooms - see the sign, top center - and each urinal is decorated with a potted plant.  Primroses are nice, but I think a Boston Fern would look more elegant.

Until I looked at this picture on my laptop I hadn't realized that urinals are hung at different heights - makes sense, but I haven't actually seen that many urinals in my long life.  I guess it is a "guy thing".

           Yellow primroses for the shorties.

And shades of red for the medium to tall.  Rather festive.

Morning in San Diego 01-23-14

I did sleep at the motel in San Diego - actually, five hours straight.  Unheard of!  But when I had to get up at 3am or so, I couldn't get back to sleep, so computed for about half an hour and then tried the bed again - it was very comfortable, but one of those thick mattresses and they should have supplied a stool so I could get into bed easily.  Considering it is very close to the airport it was very quiet except around 6:30am when some early riser let his door slam.  However, I went back to sleep for another hour or more for a total night's sleep of about eight hours.  I'm one of those who believe I can catch up on my sleep, so I am working at that this week.  The eight hours was a good start.  Tomorrow I am up early and off to Road to California quilt show in Ontario, CA.  If you see me there, please say Hello.

It was gorgeous at 9am or so, just a comfortable temperature to step out the patio door and look around.  There was a phoebe catching bugs around the lawn and sitting on the flag poles for the mini golf layout.  They never seem very frightened of me.

Winter Flowers 01-21-14

Hurrah!  I managed to get a couple pictures posted after all.  Look at the great centers on these two daisies - on the left blue with tiny yellow beads and on the right a glittering black with a piled ring of gold beads.

And see how the flowers lean toward the sun - this is about 11am.

No pictures again.  Don't know how to deal with Blogger sometimes and tonight is one of these times.  I am in San Diego and intend to be in bed in another ten minutes.  I came down this afternoon because the exhibit at Visions Art Museum closed on Sunday and today the quilts came down.  I sorted, rolled them, covered the rolls with sheets and will pick the rolls up at the museum when it opens at 10am tomorrow.  Only the gift shop is open until the new exhibit is hung and opens Feb 7th..   I'll unroll the quilts on my cutting table and repackage them for storage until the next exhibit which will be at Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, CA, March 14 through 19 when I will be "Collector in Residence".  If you see me there please tell me you read my blog.

Be safe.  Keep well.  Love, Del-on-the-Road

Another exhibit at Visions Art Museum 01-20-14

During the same time period that the TCQC quilts were at Visions Art Museum there were two other exhibits showing.  One was the Vision Member's Challenge with the subject of birds and the other was.......

..... with quilts from Charlotte Bird and Cathy Denton.  They had challenged each other - see the placard above.  Here are two of my favorites, but I didn't buy either of them.

This is Cathy Denton's "Calliope" done with thickened Procion dye on silk fabric.
Machine quilted.

And Charlotte Bird's "Calliope" done with ink jet printing, hand cut fused applique,  machine pieced and quilted.

I also liked "Cayuse".  Cathy" is silk fabric hand painted with  thickened Procion dye.  machine quilting.
Charlotte Bird's "Cayuse" is deconstructed silk screen, hand cut fused applique, machine sewn and quilted, hand embroidery.

It is a fascinating juxtaposition of two artists with different techniques and life experience.

Monday, January 20, 2014

I have pictures of one of the other two exhibits that ran concurrently with "New Acquisitions from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection", but Blogger won't let me post them.  I will try again tomorrow.  The exhibit "C is for...." is a collaborative project from Charlotte Bird and Cathy Denton and shows a quilt from each based on a word selected from the "C" part of the dictionary.  It was quite a fascinating exhibit that offered a lot of explanatory signage - but worth it.  The third exhibit is a challenge on the subject of birds from Visions Art Museum members. All three exhibits will be dismantled on Tuesday and then the next exhibit, "Coast to Coast", will be hung.  See the website for details.  www.visionsartmuseum.org         Del

Moon in the morning 01-18-14

I am not a morning person, so I rarely see the wonders of dawn.  These pictures are not quite dawn, but it was fast approaching.

Moon and the long needle pines.
Moon in the Melaleuca tree.

Tomorrow (actually today) the exhibit of quilts from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection will close at the Visions Art Museum in San Diego.  I'll take one more trip down with a friend and then go back on Tuesday to bring the quilts home.
