Foods banned in US 07-05-19

Last week I posted about the Kinder Toy that I bought at Albertson's.  I was thinking it was the same as those that cannot be imported into the USA.  But I was mistaken.  I read this blurb from Facebook (or somewhere) and see that the problem with the Kinder Toy made in another country was that the toy was actually embedded in the candy.  Not so the one I bought - the candy was in one half of the egg shaped container and the toy in the other half.  Below is the URL where I read this.

There has been a lot of shaking going on in SCalifornia the last few days.  I felt the latest 7.2 quake this evening, another rolling version.  The location of the quake was about 130 miles to the north east of Placentia.   The experts predict more shakers to come.  Hope they aren't in the middle of the night - that is so disconcerting! 

Weary of problems with laptop. 03-30-14

Well, I guess Blogger has found out how I was doing pictures and they have plugged that hole. No pictures tonight again. I have spent the entire day on the computer trying to make things happen and I have not had any luck. The Surfside QGuild newsletter is complete, but my laptop won't let me send it out! I'll go somewhere tomorrow and try someone else's computer. You may not be hearing from me for a week or so. Takes time to set up a new computer.

I did indeed feel the earthquake. I had just opened the door into the garage to put some trash out when the 5.1 quake hit. My brain asked me why my garage was shaking, but it soon realized that the entire house was shaking. I just held onto the door frame and waited for it to stop. I've felt a half dozen aftershocks, they just make one feel a little queasy (spell check not working!). Rest assured this was not the BIG ONE, nor is it a predictor of the BIG ONE. Just an everyday sort of shaker. Nothing as scary as a tornado. Love, Del-at-home

Happy Bird Day 01-08-09

A corny title, I know, but it applies to this day. This morning early I heard a mourning dove calling - a first for the new year - and there was a house finch in my neighbor's TV antenna.

I stopped at Starbuck's lot to see if there were any white pelicans and there were! Along with a LOT of fishermen. There are 'native' (as much as anything is native to SCalifornia) fish, but this lake, like all others, is stocked periodically.

I need a MUCH better camera to photograph such long shots, but I think you can see a boat in the water in the background - just below the red truck. After watching for about a half hour I decided that the goal of the boat was to chase the pelicans. This is suppose to be a protected wildlife area (I presume fish are not wild life), or so the signs say. I drove around to the entrance to the lake (about where the clump of trees are on the right)....

and scared up a few guinea fowl inside the gate. I stopped at the entrance kiosk and asked the guy if he knew there was a boat chasing the pelicans. Yeah, sez he, they are catching the fish - they belong in the ocean. I replied that white pelicans are fresh water birds. And he poleaxed me with, " I don't care, this is private property and the pelicans are trespassing." And I drove away thinking about who to call to find out if there is actually a prohibition against pelican trespassing!

We did have a little earthquake in SCalifornia this evening. I felt it as just a little rocking, but the people in San Bernardino thought it was "The Big One", since they were right on top of the epicenter. But it was only 4.3 and there were no injuries and no major damage. Mostly items off of shelves.

Shake, Rattle and Roll 07-29-08

Yes, we had an earthquake today - 5.4 on the Richter scale, which is quite strong. I was having lunch with a friend in Tustin and when the rolling stopped we judiciously moved to an outside table away from the large windows. But we didn't feel any aftershocks. There was one this evening that I felt, but it was minuscule.

There was no real damage at my house. Cupboard doors opened and drawers rolled out, but only these few things flew out of the pantry onto the floor. Several standing clocks were knocked from shelves to the floor, but only one seems to have suffered an injury. It was a "Free Gift" w/purchase thing many years ago, so no big loss if it doesn't recover. Books fell in the office and I had to get the tongs to move them a bite so I could get the door open to pick everything up and put it back in the bookcase.

The fabric shelves and boxes were fine, but I will make it a priority to have them anchored to the wall. All the tall pieces of furniture are anchored to keep them from toppling over in a shaker. The piles/boxes/bags of scraps were undisturbed (snort), but one of my small design boards flopped over - on the right in the picture above. So, all is well here. I am still having trouble with Picasa. I asked for some help on the members help list, but haven't received any answer. I never have on any question I have posed, but where there is hope.....! I will try something else tomorrow to get the Quilt Festival pictures posted.
