A day of rain and cool weather 10-11-12

Southern California has had such a long stretch of extreme heat and only a few traces of rain since the rain season started the first of July.   Only last week it was over 100F on my patio on different days.   Today we finally had one day of rain.  Where I live there was just a heavy shower in the morning and no more.  But in other areas the rain turned to hail and thunder/lightning shook up every one's animals.

About 10am this was the view to the north - very threatening.  But also beautiful.

Within a minute I took this picture from the exact same spot, but looking to the east over the park.   For Placentia the rain was over for the day.   The high temp this afternoon was 78F and for the weekend  temps are predicted to be in the high 80's again.  Sigh!

SCalifornia Driving 10-09-12

I was in San Clemente today for Surfside QGuild meeting and went to lunch with the ladies afterward. That put me on the I-5 when there was a SigAlert at San Juan Capistrano with all but the carpool lane blocked. I tried surface streets, but so did a thousand other drivers, so I finally got back on the highway. It took over two hours to get home, which normally takes a little less than an hour, and I am really beat.

I think I will go to bed early tonight. I pick up Corky tomorrow to stay until Sunday.

Hospitality table flowers done by Marjie Butterworth and won by Anne Baron.

Another treasure from a quilting friend 10-08-12

I'm still thinking of the treasures friends have given me.  Over the years there have been several sewing accessories that became integral parts of my lifetime sewing addiction.

This is an "ort catcher" - an "ort" being a scrap or tidbit and is usually used in connection with food scraps.  But embroiderers co opted the word to mean the thread ends and tiny bits of  fabric leftover when sewing.

This little basket block ort catcher was made about 25 years ago by my dear friend Betty Lou Lucas who died ten years ago this month.   She was an accomplished needlewoman and we belonged to several of the same groups, including a long lasting friendship group.

This piece has been well used and I still use it when I am able to do handwork - it brings my friend into my mind with joy.

Tiny June Underwood quilt in TCQC 10-07-12

One of the very special things about being part of the huge community of quilters is making little quilts and treasures for your quilting friends.  If you are in a friendship group you are probably familiar with the many ways of exchanging such things.  Since we know the amount of time, creativity and labor that goes into each gift I think we appreciate them more than a non-quilter.
June made this little piece for me..... well, "just because".
June's Blog:  http://southeastmain.wordpress.com/

"Just Because"  June O. Underwood  2005  5"W x 4"L
Painted on silk, machine quilted.

June signed on the front with her initials.

She also signed on the back.  I added the "Just Because" title, the date and June's last name.   Those who know June might be surprised at the fabric on the back.  We have grown accustomed to her hand dyed  and hand painted fabrics.  But, hey, she is a quilter so she has a fabric library like all the rest of us.  Although lately she has turned to oil painting and has traveled east to do some plein air - hope she is home in Portland soon.  I miss her online.
