Friday Food 03-13-20

My friend and I had such a nice lunch at Rosewood restaurant in Oceanside on Wednesday.  This is a place that just reading the menu makes you want to go back to try more of the tempting dishes.  We both had the Carbonara because it is both of our favorites.  And it was very good.  The noodles were a little more al dente than I prefer, but they were fat and thick and coated with sauce.

It was the first time I have been served Carbonara with a raw egg yolk that the diner mixes in. Very creamy and tasty.

Before I broke the yolk I accepted several spoonsful of grated Parmesan cheese.

The servings were not large so we felt we could indulge in dessert.

I had the Almond Semifreddo which was filled with toasted almonds.

A decoration on the huge plate - caramel with chocolate sauce made into a star.  Nice touch.

My lunch partner had the Expresso gelato.  Very tasty, but not as good as Talenti coffee with chocolate bits.

"May Day" a quilt by Jenny Lyon 03-12-20

The other day when I posted the picture of Jenny, her quilt, and me, I should have posted a picture of the quilt which has been in TCQC since October 2010 and frequently hangs on the wall at my home..  Here are some pictures of that lovely quilt.   Taken inside with artificial light - not the best.

May Day  Jenny Lyon  2010  12" X 12"
Silk, metallic thread, beads, machine pieced and quilted.

The center design adapted from Japanese Mon.

This is the best close up I can do with my camera.  It shows the amazingly accurate quilting and all those tiny beads.

The back of quilt.  Jenny has used a sheer for the sleeve and written info on the back instead of a label.  No way to get in touch with the artist!

Beautiful drive to Oceanside 03-11-20

The drive to Oceanside today was a joy.  The traffic was light and there weren't very many of those drivers that have to get in front of everyone else - weaving between lanes and trying to intimidate other drivers by climbing their tailpipe.  It was an hour and 15 minutes each way, no stress.  Lunch was very good - more about that on Friday.

The blue sky meets the very blue Pacific Ocean.
That pile of clouds is over Catalina Island and to the right is the non-operating nuclear station at San Onofre. .

Going north on I-5 near Camp Pendleton, headed for that pile of clouds over Orange County.

And off to the east are clouds over the hills behind Camp Pendleton.  No rain today.  Temp about 70F.

Empty Spools has canceled Sessions II and III because Asilomar is closed for four weeks.  I read that the virus affected passengers from a cruise ship will be housed there.  Hope they can disinfect it sufficiently because I am planning to transfer my class to the Independent Study class the last week of April.  Can't go a year without Empty Spools.

Surfside Quilt Guild meeting today 03-10-20

Jenny Lyon was the speaker at SQG today.  We had never met, but ten years ago I purchased her 12"X12" quilt "May Day" on the Studio Art Quilt Associates online auction.  It is an exquisite silk piece with very fine machine quilting and it is embellished with the tiniest beads.  She said today that looking through a book of Japanese Mons (komon) inspired her to design this piece.

Jenny Lyon, maker, and Del Thomas, collector, with Jenny's 2010 work "May Day", a 12" X 12" silk quilt with hand beading.   Machine pieced and FMQ.

I did take pictures of the quilts that Jenny showed at the meeting, but AOL is having problems and I haven't figured out a way around them.  So, I will try to post them soon.

Lots of rain today - hurrah!  More is promised for the rest of the week.  Temps in mid 60s and mid 50s at night.  KoKo and I just walk in the rain and then come in and get dried off.  It is not too cold and we warm up fast.

New "Worm" Moon 03-09-20

The Worm moon is the last full moon before the winter equinox, so called because the ground is thawing and the worms are starting to dig around in the soil.  There are a number of different nicknames for this moon, including the Crust Moon because the snow becomes crusty from daytime thawing and night time freezing, the Sap Moon because it is time to tap maple trees for sap, the Lenten Moon because it appears right around the Christian season of Lent, and the Crow Moon in connection with Native American folklore.  It is a supermoon which appears to be larger and brighter than just an every night old moon!

Hiding in the clouds.  7:30pm PDT

This was taken with the "night" setting on my cell phone camera.  It made an interesting shape out of the round moon. The  temperature at 7:30pm tonight was 70F.  The predicted rain did not fall, maybe tomorrow.

Another dose of KoKo 03-08-20

I wonder if this homeowner is letting his grass grow so that the bees and butterflies can enjoy the dandelions.  KoKo just plops himself down and relaxes.

He just HAS TO give me a bath sometimes.  It must be the salt, eh?
