TCQC Program 05-10-12

In January the Crazy Quilters Quilt Guild scheduled me for a program and yesterday was the day.  This group meets at Leisure World in Laguna Woods, CA, and is celebrating their ten year anniversary.
I've been concerned that I wouldn't be over whatever "bug" I have and my voice would disappear again.  I was okay yesterday, except for being exhausted when I got home, but this morning my voice was gone again.  I have an appointment with my GP on Monday, I hope she has an answer for me - this has been going on since April 7th!  I did a round of antibiotics, maybe they just were not enough.

I took 30 quilts for my program - including a board full of 12x12s and a few postcards.  These three quilts were those that I hung on racks on the stage.  I wish I could hang many more quilts so that people could look at them closely, but it isn't practical.

Surfside Quilters Guild Special Day 05-08-12

Can it be the third "birthday" for Surfside Quilters Guild in San Clemente?  Hard to believe that it hasn't been longer considering all that we have accomplished.  But, on the other hand, where have those years gone?  Today our new President Jan Hirth conducted the meeting and there were two special presentations.
Each year the members of the Guild make 6" blocks for the outgoing president, this year it is Joann Bishop, the blocks are assembled and hand quilted by members who volunteer.  This tradition has been ongoing with all the Orange County Guilds starting in 1982 with Orange County Quilters Guild and all the quilts have pretty much the same format.  Joann asked for cottage/house blocks in pastel colors - reflecting, in part, her years as a realtor before she retired, and the sense that each house connects in friendship to the home of a member.

It is a charming quilt and I hope Joann will bring it back to a future meeting for better pictures.

The other presentation was a special quilt made for a member who has given a great deal to make the guild successful.  Mary Freedman deserves this recognition for all the hours, dollars, thoughtful gifts and devotion she has given to create a dynamic and active guild.  Members of the Board, past and present, were asked to contribute a star block of any size which were assembled into this quilt which is a nice cuddle size.

I don't think we tell our friends and fellow guild members often enough how much we appreciate their contributions to our lives.  I thank each of you for your devotion and contribution to this guild and all the quilting activities that are available today.  You enrich my life.

Nikki Wheeler 12X12 Quilt in TCQC 05-06-12

This brightly colored quilt is another of the wonderful gifts from the members of the online group "Twelve by 12" to thank me for sponsoring their Quilt Festival exhibit at Houston/Cincinnati/Long Beach.
www.twelveby12.org
Nikki Wheeler has been making and using "paper fabric" in her quilts and used it for the trees in this piece. You can Google "paper fabric" for descriptions of the process - one is http://www.joggles.com/fabricpaper.htm

"Rainbow Trees"  Nikki Wheeler  2011 12"X12"
Cotton, paper, flat beads.  Machine appliqued and quilted.
 http://www.nikkiwheeler.blogspot.com/

Nikki lives in Washington State and I grew up in Oregon, so we can't help but be tree lovers, even of bright fantasy trees.  The background quilting reminds me of Van Gogh's skies.   Reversing  the bead colors is very effective - they are flat disks with a hole from edge to edge.

The back is covered with fused hand dyed cotton, so the quilting cannot be seen.

A signature, but no label - no way of knowing how to contact the artist.  Anyone who wants to promote sales of their work should always put a contact of some kind on the label.  I know how to get in touch with Nikki, but nobody else would be able to trace her through this quilt.
