Quilt from TCQC 10-15-23

Purchased from the SAQA 2012 online auction.  Another tree quilt for that expanding part of TCQC.   I don't know much about Elisabeth, who lives in Geneva, Switzerland, but she has a very nice website showing her work and listing all the places around the world where it has been shown.

Batiks and hand dyed cotton fabrics. Bamboo batting.  Rayon threads.  Fused applique.  Free-motion machine quilting.

I like the way she has used batiks with tree twig like shapes to give depth to the forest - not overpowering the background, just a spot here and there.  The tree fabric is a nice choice with shadows of branches and twigs.

 
She has FMQ'd with what I think of as "tree bark" lines vertically over the entire piece.

 
Rather than binding, Elisabeth has chosen to satin stitch the edges.
 

 
Lovely backing fabric and a generous sleeve. However, she didn't leave any slack in the sleeve which is a problem I see a lot in quilts made outside the USA/Canada.  It really is necessary for shows that use the round rod and drape set up - without any slack the top of the quilt is bent over to accommodate the bar. 

 
Nice clear label gives two ways to contact the artist.  I have added the size for my use.

A Bird Bath 10-10-23

I know that I would not take a regular, daily  walk If it weren't for KoKo.  We used to go further,  but with my sciatica problems I have a time limit of about half an hour.  Just enough to go one  loop around the neighborhood.   Besides the physical exercise we see our neighbors and KoKo receives lots of patting and gives a lot of licks  (bare toes in sandals!}.  I stretch my brain trying to remember the  names of plants, birds, and the people we met.  I need the human contact, no matter how slight, and I think KoKo does also.    There are even a few dogs KoKo will tolerate, as  long as  they aren't very much larger than  he is.   With regular walking we discover changes and improvements, see what is blooming, and pick up bits of  trash  along the way, especially pieces  of plastic.   

 Doesn't look like much; dry dirt and some leaf litter and tiny stones. 

This is what we think of when we hear about a bird bath.  

But in this patch of dirt along our walking route are many little "tubs" made by the little sparrows, bluebirds, doves, and others. 

Difficult to take a picture, I will try again when the light is different. 

It  is hard  to  get  close as the birds just fly away.  This was taken from across the street and enlarged.  House sparrows enjoying a morning dust bath.

Friday Food 10-07-23

I haven't been to Fish in a Bottle for sushi in months.  Don't know why, guess I just haven't gotten back in the dining out habit.  Carol and I went on Monday evening,  discovering all over again how delicious the food is there.  I didn't take a picture of the Tempura, which looks like tempura everywhere. 

Carol had a glass of wine. Always looks good, but I can no longer tolerate alcohol.

Crunch,Crunch is one of our old favorite rolls.  

Shrimp tempura, crab meat, cucumber, avocado, and crispy crunch on the outside.

This cucumber roll is new on the menu and we will order it again.

There is no rice and the outside is wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber strips. 

Albacore, crab, fish roe, and??  I don't remember what else and the online menu does not list this roll - too new, I guess. 

I brought home the leftovers and ate them for lunch the next day.  And they were again delicious. I will start going there frequently again.  Before Covid I went once  a week.

Another Miscellaneous 10-01-23

On Saturday I dropped KoKo off with Nancy Ota in San Clemente and drove to San  Diego for the meeting of the Art Stream group.  We had the  meeting in the classroom at Rosie's Quilt  Shop which also gave us an opportunity to shop.  It is the largest quilt shop remaining in Southern  California,  but it is more than a two hour drive for me, so I don't go  there very often.  Great place for a meeting  - lots of tables and pin-able walls, with a good Mexican restaurant next door.  We are only six members now, which is a nice size for most homes and makes for more cohesive conversations.   We do have Show and Tell, but I don't have  permission to post that  part  on my blog.  

It was rather a surprise there was rain both going and returning.  Not a steady rain, but periods of misting and periods of really coming down.  Slowed traffic, but the traffic was light for a Saturday so it sort of evened the timing out. 

There were Nelda and Deb and Andrea and Judy and me (no picture).

Ellen is vacationing. 

After enjoying lunch at the restaurant next door we honored all the fall birthdays with a delicious chocolate cake topped with fruit on little clouds of icing.  Delicious. 

By the time the meeting was over I was too tired to do much shopping, but I looked for a bit and only purchased a yard of each of these fabrics.  The bottom piece is actually a much brighter green, but you all have probably seen it in many different shades.  

I stopped in San Clemente to collect KoKo, who always enjoys a day with Nancy. When we got home we took a little nap (KoKo and Froggy on my lap) and then  went to bed early.  That two-plus hours each way really wipes me out these days, but being with such compatible friends is worth it!
