Visions Art Museum current exhibits closing 09-18-14

"Hanging Gardens of California"  Arline Fisch
An installation of brightly colored floating wire forms and jewelry from the artist's collection.

This is one of the three exhibits currently at Visions Art Museum.  There are also "30 Quilts for 30 Years" by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, and six quilts in "Tracings" by Deidre Adams.

All of these exhibits will close this Sunday, September 21st.  So, if you have been planning to go, now is the time.   Liz and I will be there tomorrow for one last look.

The International Biennial Quilt Visions exhibit will open on October 3rd and the artists reception will be on Saturday, October 11 from 5pm to 7pm.  It is always great to meet the artists who make these wonderful quilts.

Missing you 09-16-14

I miss my friends when I go on a Road Trip and I miss them when they go on vacation.  Lots of September trips this year for everyone but me!  Liz has been in the eastern Sierra for a month and returned on Saturday, Carol and Dick are in Great Britain, Terry is in Spain, Karen is in New York, etc.   It is magical to find a post from "abroad" or receive a phone call
from some place in the vast USA.   Our electronic world both connects us and disconnects us. I hope everyone is having a good experience and comes home safe and happy.

I'm starting a new edition of the Surfside QGuild newsletter - October already.  I will include information about the upcoming November Fest where we offer a quilt auction (both new and vintage quilts), raffle baskets, lots of visiting and LUNCH!  It is our big fund raiser of the year and you can came and enjoy the festivities.  It will be on Tuesday, November 11th at 10am.  Our meeting place is San Clemente Presbyterian Church which is just off the I-5 between La Palizada and Avenida Presidio.   Hope you will consider joining us.

This is a new quilt made just for our live auction.

This is one of the vintage quilts.  It is in excellent condition.
Probably 1920 - 1940.

New 12X12 quilt in TCQC 09-14-14

This is one of four quilts I purchased at the Visions Art  Museum fund raiser last evening.

"Color Form 67"  Gail Baar - Chicago, IL   2014
Very modern, a crossover to the mid-century modern paintings.
The background and the back of the quilt are pure white - the camera turned them blue.

Close up of the machine quilting, all done with gold colored thread.

Should be pure white, not blue.  She kindly left some slack in the sleeve - doesn't take much, just a 1/4" is enough to allow the quilt to lay flat against the wall when there is a slat inserted.

The label has an added woven label with Gail's name and she has added her signature on the side facing.

Fund Raiser at Visions Art Museum 09-13-14

Would you believe that both of the camera batteries I carry were dead?  So, there is only one picture of this event.  And then the battery gave out!

Starting to call the winning numbers for the raffle baskets.   On the left in the background is Karen Cunagin, museum member.  Center is Beth Smith, Museum Director, and on the right is Kim Egeland, Board Secretary.

The event is called "Sip, Savor, and Stroll" and it is the major fund raiser of the year.  There were about 30 raffle baskets (tickets were sold to attendees and we dropped half of each ticket in the bags connected to the baskets we wanted to win - this is sometimes called a Chinese Raffle, I haven't a clue why).   Several people won more than one basket, in fact, I believe one lucky lady won either four or five baskets.  I won one that I had selected because it has a yard of a great red and dark blue fabric.  Also three large chocolate bars, a teapot,  a jar of Scandinavian Orange Marmalade from Denmark, and some machine appliqued coasters.  I traded the coasters with one of my table mates for some note cards with the initial D in fancy script.  She loved the coasters and has no "D"s in her family.

There were also 12X12 quilts in a silent auction - maybe twenty - all of which were from VAM challenges in the past year that failed to sell during the months they were shown in the museum gift shop.  I liked four of them and I guess nobody else wanted them, so I added them to TCQC.  They will appear on this blog some Sunday in the future.  Maybe even tomorrow!

It is excessively hot here and I found the 81F in San Diego rather refreshing!  There was a nice breeze off the water and the humidity was reasonable.   Placentia had 99F and now at 12:45am it is 76F.  Supposed to be even hotter tomorrow.   And hotter yet on Monday and Tuesday.  Blessed Air Conditioning will save me from melting away.  The fire in Silverado Canyon is about eight miles away and the wind is the other direction, so we haven't had any ash or smoke smell.
